Update as of 11/5/18

As many of you know, this fund was started by Meghan’s aunt Trisha in the middle of the night on Friday Nov 2 in response to finding out that Meghan was put on a ventilator due to the affects of malaria. There was a chance, per the hospital, that we would need to fund an emergency medical evacuation from Ghana to the US after they consulted the American Embassy.

Sadly, Meghan lost her battle and succumbed to malaria. Due to this tragedy, the focus of this fund has evolved from a medical evacuation to bringing Meghan home to Nebraska to be buried and the related costs.

We are working to establish a charitable funds account and will have that finalized soon.  Thank you so much and we will keep you updated.  Trisha Hume Steele

Previous Original Story:
To all of my family and friends, My niece Meghan Liddy is in a hospital in Ghana West Africa and is in critical condition. She contracted Malaria and was just put on a ventilator tonight to help her breath. Her kidneys are in dire condition, she has become septic and has developed a pulmonary embolism. We are trying to figure out everything in this complicated situation. There are four American doctors working on Meghan’s case. One of the doctors called my sister directly a little while ago so we would have the most updated information. We are raising funds to do an emergency medical evacuation from Ghana to the US. Meghan does have health insurance but it is only available if we can get her stateside. We will try to keep everyone updated and feel free to share to family and friends. Thank you! Trisha Steele- Meghan Liddy’s aunt

Good evening friends, I just wanted to give everyone an update on Meghan. Today it has been 30 days since we lost Meghan. A lot has happened and we are making steady progress. Meghan was recently moved to a funeral home in Accra, Ghana, which is about six hours from Kumasi. Accra is the capital and has the only international airport. Upon consultation with Meghan’s doctors and her longtime friends in Ghana, we found out Meghan’s wish was to be cremated. This request was made known by Meghan, before her recent hospitalization, to her doctors. We, above all, have wanted to be guided by Meghan’s wishes. We are eternally grateful for her friends who have helped us. Meghan’s friends in Kumasi were able to secure the release of her body from the hospital. In fact, two blessed friends were there to make sure Meghan was transferred correctly to the funeral home and that she was not alone. I can not thank these two friends enough for staying with Meghan during her cremation and calling me directly. This has been one of the most painful times of our lives but the love that others have shown has helped beyond measure.
We made the decision to have a portion of Meghan’s remains to stay in Ghana to be buried in Kumasi so that her foster daughters and friends would have a memorial site. The rest of Meghan’s cremated remains will be flown to a funeral home in Omaha, Nebraska once the wired funds and additional paperwork is completed. We are hoping to have her funeral and memorial service in Omaha the first part of January. Meghan will be buried near her maternal grandmother.
Meghan’s foster daughters, Rhoda and Priscilla, are doing ok but struggle at times. Meghan’s mom, MaryAnn, was able to Skype with the girls this past week. The core group of friends are trying to keep a consistent and healthy environment for the girls and not overwhelm them.
Our plan is to use the remaining funds that were raised during the GoFundMe to help with Rhoda and Priscilla’s future medical and education expenses.
I wish I had easy and quick answers concerning all aspects of this situation but I don’t. I will update as soon as I have a definitive date of when Meghan will be transferred to Omaha and the date for her funeral. Thank you all again. Trisha Hume Steele, Meghan’s Aunt
