Megan's (First) Aid

$32,790 of $75,000 goal

Raised by 493 people in 5 months
As you can see by the photo, Megan was destined to help her community.  She began volunteering at 16 and remains serving as an EMT for several towns.  Now she needs help from the community.  Last Friday she had a cardiac episode and went into cardiac arrest for 45 minutes while at Community Medical Center in Toms River.  Once pulses returned, she was flown to Temple University Medical Center (Philadelphia, Pa), where she remains in critical condition, on life support but still in a medically induced coma.  The Cardiologists and Neurologists are still working together, trying to determine what the cause of her condition is.  At this point, we have no idea how long of a recovery period will be, but we do know that she has a long road ahead of her.

For those that don’t know, EMS is a calling and not a profession known to be well paid.  Although Megan lives conservatively while working three jobs, she has bills that any 28-year-old would have.  Her family is now faced with her managing her regular existing bills, such as student loans, car payments, insurance etc.  Additionally, it is expected that insurance will not fully cover all her medical bills especially because of the level of care she has been receiving (ICU, Medevac flight).  A Medevac flight alone is expected to cost in excess of $20,000.

We are here asking for your support so that Megan's family; Mike, Deb and Michele, can still manage her daily bills and mounting medical expenses.  Although we are here asking for financial assistance, more importantly we are asking for your thoughts and prayers.  Naturally we are hoping for a full recovery, but at this point we’d be happy with her improving from this grave condition.

Many of Megan's friends have inquired about starting a GoFundMe campaign for her.  We decided as a family to manage this campaign to ensure all donations are used for their intended purpose.  Thank you for taking the time to read this and the countless offers of assistance to the family from the entire community.

Go Fund Me has requested this be added to this story.  This Fund has been started and Administered by Megan's uncle, Brian Geoghegan, with the permission of her parents.

11/8/18 6pm- Sorry for the extended time since the last update. The fundraisers for Meg so far have been a resounding success. Thank you to everyone for your continued support. This update is from Megan's father, Mike....
Some big stuff going on here, well big to us anyway.

Its been just over two months since Megan's cardiac arrest. She's been in an acute rehab for just about a month now and making good progress. She is walking with assistance, going to the bathroom on the toilet (believe me a big deal) but she has not been able to speak or make any noise other than sounding like a goose when she laughs and she does a lot of that combined with some frustration and crying but to be expected.

So yesterday we took her to see and ENT (ear, nose, throat Dr). He stuck some contraption up her nose and down to her vocal cords stimulating them. We were very afraid that they had been damaged by the intubation or tubing and she would never speak again. Boy were we pleased when he said that everything looked fine and her larynx was in perfect working order. On the down side that meant that the brain damage was keeping her from speaking but that was better than a damaged larynx and brain damage so we will deal with it.

Well most days I bring my laptop to the rehab and I play music videos for her most the day singing to her. Well tonight Deb, Michele (her younger sister) and I are with her playing the video of the Killers at Royal Albert Hall in England, Megs favorite video. So Mish and I are singing Spaceman to her and the part where the audiance is going,"Wo hoo Woo hoo" Megan starts going "Woo Woo". She shocked herself and was so excited to make noise she started balling her eyes out. So did the rest of us. Well after that we got her to say "Moo" her sisters nickname, "Nan" her gma, "No", "Love", "Mom" "Murph" her dog and "Bye". Im sure it had something to do with the Doctor stimulating her vocal cords during her exam. What a couple days.

But bigger than that we also found that she never lost her biggest talent and mark in this world, yes she is still able to stick a spoon on her nose. Just wonderful.

10/29/18 2pm- Meg is still making forward progress!! She has been working hard every day with Speech, Occupational and Physical therapists!! Today they have decided to add cardiac rehab to her daily daily routine. With the work of the therapists she has begun walking with the assistance of a walker.. and today she took steps without the walker!!! She is still having difficulty with speech but we are hopeful this improves as her trach hole grows shut. The fundraisers to date were both an overwhelming success. There is talk of a benefit hockey game coming.. stay tuned for more on this as it comes available. We still dont think she is up for visitors at this time... but here are some pics from today's visit...
