The ME/FM Society of BC  is a registered charity that was formed to help and support people, and their families, living with the health conditions Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) and/or Fibromyalgia (FM).

There are 100,000 people with ME and FM living in British Columbia. Living with ME and/or FM is not easy. These conditions can be very disabling and often have a devastating effect on people’s lives.  They are often lifelong.  Many people are unable to work, enjoy their usual activities, or even look after themselves and their families.

Lack of awareness and knowledge of these illnesses has resulted in ME and FM patients having the greatest unmet health care needs of any patient group in Canada.

May 12 is International Awareness Day for ME and FM. And this May, our focus is to educate and raise awareness through a number of events and campaigns.

Our fundraising goal of $10,000 will help us succeed. The more money we raise, the more we can achieve.

Donate to this campaign before April 27 and you will be eligible for one of these great gifts:

Top Donor. The person making the highest single donation will receive a 10-film pass to Vancouver's DOXA Documentary Film Festival!

2nd Top Donor will receive 2 tickets to the DOXA opening night film and reception,  plus 2 tickets to Jennifer Brea's acclaimed documentary about ME, Unrest

3rd Top Donor will receive 2 tickets to the DOXA closing night film and reception, plus 2 tickets to Unrest

4th Top Donor will receive 2 tickets to the Opera Mariposa's performance: Here I Stand

There’s much work to do, but these are the Society’s goals for this 2017 GoFundMe campaign:

Goal 1 | MAY 12 AWARENESS EVENTS | $2,500

Sponsorship of Unrest screenings at Vancouver's DOXA Documentary Film Festival by ME/FM Society of BC

When:      Friday, May 12/17 at 8:30pm and
                     Saturday May 13/17 at 12pm
Where:    Pacific Cinematheque, 1131 Howe St.,

Jennifer Brea’s much-anticipated feature documentary, Unrest, will have two screenings at DOXA. There is a Skype Q&A planned with Jennifer following the May 13th screening.

DOXA is a popular public forum and a great place to raise awareness about this misunderstood and devastating disease. Our sponsorship will allow us to reach a much broader public outside of the ME community. More details on the film and screening .

World Café: Patient Engagement Event in collaboration with the BC Women’s Hospital’s Complex Chronic Diseases Program

When:    Saturday, May 27, 2017 at 1 - 3.15 pm
Where:  Chan Education Centre & Auditorium at the                          Child and Family Research Institute of BC

The Complex Chronic Diseases Program (CCDP) provides care for patients with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Lyme Disease and Multiple Chemical Sensitivities. This year the CCDP and the ME/FM Society of BC have agreed to partner for ME & FM May Awareness month to create a World Cafe. The goal is to provide a platform where patients can discuss issues pertaining to the CCDP,  give their feedback, and generate goals and actions which the hospital will then incorporate into their coming year’s planning.

Go to our website for more information on out World Cafe event .

Goal 2 | Province-Wide Patient Outreach Campaign | $7,500

Little money has been invested in research for ME and FM, few universities include information  on the diseases in their medical or health sciences curricula, and misinformation abounds about both illnesses.

The result? knowledge about ME and FM is extremely limited in the medical community, leaving patients waiting on average 5-7 years for a diagnosis, and often receiving harmful treatments.

The aim of our Province-Wide Outreach Campaign is to educate and raise awareness of the illnesses among patients. Our goal is that, armed with this information, patients can be diagnosed and find support much sooner.

We will create easy-to-understand information on ME, FM and our Society. The flyers will inform patients of key symptoms and direct them to our website for further information and support.

Our goal is to have our flyers displayed in as many health-related offices in British Columbia as possible.

The donation deadline to be eligible for the DOXA rewards is 11:59 pm (PST), Wednesday, April 26/17.

We’ll be accepting donations after this date!
