Medical Plane Grounded
Donation protected
Pilot John Billings, a World War II veteran, has volunteered to fly sick patients on a remarkable 448 flights on his own plane, and his co-pilot, Nevin Showman, is close behind at 330 flights.
Their most recent flight came Oct. 18, when they flew a 2-year-old girl (shown here) who needed an operation from West Virginia to Children's Hospital in Philadelphia.
In August, John and Nevin flew EIGHT medical flights in just seven days, with stops in North Carolina, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and elsewhere. (You can see all their Angel Flights here: https://bit.ly/2OTIdrB). ) At age 95, John remains qualified to fly solo, but he prefers to fly with Nevin in tandem.
Unfortunately, John's Cessna plane is now grounded. He just found out that it needs an expensive piece of electronic equipment called an HSI (a horizontal situation indicator), which will cost about $5,000 to purchase and install. Until they can raise the money for the costly repair, the plane is out of use. John and Nevin are true heroes to patients in need, and we want to help them get their plane back in the air to continue their important work.
