Miller Creek MS Odyssey of the Mind

Donation protected
We are a team of 7th graders from Miller Creek Middle School hoping to make it to the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals in Ames, Iowa at the end of May. Last weekend, our humorous original 8-minute minute play, combined with our award-winning performance on the spontaneous problem-solving portion of the contest, won us second place at the state competition. Now we have to get nine people and all of our sets, costumes and props to Iowa! We are asking for help to pay for airfare, food and lodging. We will also be giving handwritten notes for donations over $25, and a signed colored photo of our team for donations over $50.

Miller Creek is a public middle school in the Dixie School District, San Rafael, California. Although Odyssey of the Mind is promoted by the district all practices are held outside of school and coached by parent volunteers. Participating teams receive very limited financial support. We are the first team from our school district to ever make it to the World Finals! We have worked really hard for many months and it paid off when we won first place in our regional tournament and second place at the State competition. The hundreds of hours spent on this effort were in addition to all of our school responsibilities, sports schedules, and other commitments like Girl Scouts.

“[OotM] is an international creative problem-solving program that engages students in their learning by allowing their knowledge and ideas to come to life in an exciting, productive environment. Participants build self-confidence, develop life skills, create new friendships, and are able to recognize and explore their true potential. OotM proves that students can have fun while they learn.” https://www.odysseyofthemind. com

OotM incorporates elements of science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) as well as teaching kids about teamwork and complex-problem solving. OotM is like a combination of 1) a stage performance where the kids write the script, build the set, and do all the acting, plus 2) a hands-on makers fair where you use engineering skills to build a bridge or other sort of challenge.

We are very excited about this amazing opportunity to join over 850 teams from around the world who will be competing at the World Finals.  We would greatly appreciate your assistance, so we can get to Iowa and represent the State of California at the World Finals.
