The arts program at the McKinney Center was started by a generous donation by the late Jim Martin in honor of his wife Mary. Jim once said, “The arts create a diversity of thinkers, both left and right brainers”. He believed that creative thinkers were the key to our future advancement, and this could only be achieved by providing children with a balanced curriculum that included math, science, and the arts. Jim’s words are echoed by educators and scientists around the country.
However, as regional school funding was cut, art and music classes in our area public schools have been decreased. Few schools offer any comprehensive art classes anymore, which diminishes the opportunity for our young learners to develop that “left and right brain thinking”. The McKinney Center fills this void by providing over eighty art, music, and dance classes each year, for all ages, taught by the area’s best artist-teachers in their field. But cost is a concern for many families in Jonesborough and Johnson City, Tennessee.
We believe that cost should never keep a child from participating in education of any kind. That is why we have offered a scholarship program every year since opening our doors four years ago. In 2017, we were able to give 33 scholarships. This coming year, we want to be able to provide 50 youth scholarships, so every child who wants to participate in the arts, and become that creative problem-solver and thinker, will have the opportunity to do so.
We cannot do this without your help. By giving to our GoFundMe campaign you will be supporting our scholarship program. You may give at any amount, but if you would like to give a scholarship to one child you can give $120.00. Our goal is to grant 50 children scholarships. We would love to reach this goal of $6,000.00 and will keep everyone updated with how many young people we support as we go!
