MC Derin's Medical Fund
After several weeks of testing, treatment, and hospitalization, on Tuesday, June 6 it was discovered that she had a build-up of cerebrospinal fluid that was causing pressure on her brain and eliciting the paralysis, loss of sight and excruciating pain. The next morning our beloved "MC" had brain surgery to insert a "shiny new shunt" (her words) and remove an old, inactive shunt from her childhood that was thought to be no longer needed.
Throughout this entire ordeal, she has remained our optimistic, determined MC, cracking jokes with the doctors and nurses even as she underwent procedures such as a lumbar puncture. They have all come to love her as much as we do.
The medical expenses are piling up quickly. If it is within your capability to give even a small amount we would be very grateful. If you cannot donate, please share this campaign with your friends and family.
Thank you so much for your kindness and love.
"Hold a true friend with both hands."~ Nigerian proverb
The support has been overwhelming, but the family continues to need help with medical bills and funds to make her home more accessible now that she is visually impaired and getting around with a walker and cane. Please share our campaign- any amount you can give is truly appreciated.
Mary Catherine is maintaining her awesome sense of humor and is already beginning to try to get out into her community, which she loves so much.
The medical bills are definitely coming in at this point. Please share this page to help spread her amazing story!
True to Mary Catherine's style-- she made a couple of stops on the way home. She stopped at CrossFit Iniquus in Crofton to say thank you to her friends there for their support and talk about additional exercises she can do during her recovery (Fundraiser at CrossFit on 7/22--$50 to participate, 100% goes to MC and family) and at Mamma Roma's Restaurant in Odenton, MD for a slice or two of their delicious pizza (wonderful Italian dishes there). Mamma Roma's owners have also been huge supporters.
Thank you so much for your support! Please continue to share her story as we begin this new chapter in her recovery and the medical bills really begin to roll in.
In other great news, Mary Catherine is rocking the rehab circuit and as if that wasn't fantastic enough--she has started to regain some of her vision! Doctors have warned that it may not be permanent, but she is taking it day by day and there have been many more "good days" than bad lately. She can now use the telephone and read texts up close if they are white print on a black background. She is amazing!
Thank you to all of you that have donated to or shared this page, and please continue to share it. We are nowhere finished with this battle and the bills are rolling in.
The next fundraiser for MC will be an Abby & Anna event on July 12 at the Greene Turtle in Gambrills, MD, followed by an event at CrossFit Iniquus in Crofton on July 22. More to come.
