Matzah For a Mitzvah

For years now, the Jewish community of Baku has put funds together in order to import and deliver matzah for the estimated 35,000 Jews in Azerbaijan and the region. This year, thanks to the wonderful George Birnbaum, we–Atlanta Jewish Academy Upper School–get the privilege and brownie points in Heaven to fundraise for the matzah and help forge a relationship between the Atlanta Jewish community and the Jewish community in Baku.
A group of us--four students, Rabbi and Mrs. Travis, and George Birnbaum--will be making the 16+ hour trek across the world to Baku, Azerbaijan. While there, we will be meeting government representatives, the chief rabbi of Baku, and students from their local Jewish day school in order to bridge the gap in our minds concerning our lives as Jews in America and Jewish life halfway across the world. While our exact itinerary is yet to be set, one thing is certain; we sure will be busy during the five days we are in Baku...
