Our son Matthew, age 9, of Heath, passed away Sunday, September 16, 2018, at Nationwide Children's Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was born September 14, 2009, at Riverside Hospital in Columbus and was a second grader at Garfield Elementary School in Heath.

An active, ornery boy whose smile and big blue eyes could light up a room. He loved his superheroes and enjoyed anything he could do outdoors, taking walks, running and swimming. Indoors he liked to play video games and playing with friends. He was first and foremost a Heath Bulldogs fan and was a huge Ohio State Buckeyes fan also. He and his family will always treasure the visits and support from Buckeyes Coach Urban Meyer and his wife Shelley. He loved the Christmas holiday and Christmas music so much that all summer he rode around on his Power Wheel listening to Christmas music on iHeartRadio. He battled a lifelong congenital heart condition with courage and a smile and will be forever remembered as a hero to his family and all who knew him.

When he was born he was diagnosed with Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) and had a stroke that damaged his left side of the brain at 6 month old.  He was caught up with his peers and was going to repeat kindergarten, then the 2nd major stroke to his right side of the brain and blood clots to the lower aorta  that damaged his intestines to the point 8in had to be removed August of 2016.  As time went on his time in the hospital increased due to his immune deficiency and weakening of his bones that was caused by his needed prolonged medicines.  This last stay at Nationwide Children's on Aug 6th 2018 was because of third spacing and increased pain.  But one week later he was diagnosed with two super bugs that patients get when long exposure to the hospital germs and deficient immune systems.  This ultimately weakened his heart and was the reason for his passing this past Sunday.

Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Matthew and Heather Offers; his sisters, Crystal L. Giglio, Dawn M. Giglio, Caroline K. Offers; his grandparents, Peter and Katherine Plante, Bernard Offers, Walter Prince and Bonita Prince; his aunts and uncle, Patty Phillips, Holly Offers, Bernard Offers, II, and Stephana (Wells) Caviness; great-uncle, Greg (Bonnie) Crawford, and many dear friends. His uncle Tony Phillips and great-grandmother Irene Crawford preceded him in death.

A Celebration of Life service for Matthew Alex Offers, Jr. will be held at Noon, on Monday, September 24, 2018, at the Brucker-Kishler Funeral Home in Newark. Pastor Kristin Santiago will officiate.  Burial will follow in Wilson Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 4pm-8pm on Sunday, at the funeral home, 985 N. 21st Street.

We will be using this money for funeral and other family expenses during this rough time.
