Matthew's Ottobock Genium X3

Reason for the Matthew fund campaign

On Friday 24th March 2017 after suffering for several years with sometimes debilitating pain in Matthew’s right leg, he tripped and broke his leg whilst walking with his school friends. He was taken to the Darlington Memorial hospital where his X-rays showed a broken femur caused by a substantial growth in his leg.  He was then transferred to the Newcastle Teenage Cancer Ward, here he was diagnosed with a rare form of Ewing Sarcoma (Cancer). The tumour had grown so large that the team of consultants at the Newcastle RVI had no option but amputate his right leg. Matthew completed his chemotherapy treatment in March 2018, this is when his physical rehabilitation began, with learning to walk with a prosthetic leg.

His current prosthetic leg provided by the NHS allows Matthew to walk, but he easily tires due to the effort he needs to move and control a manual prosthetic. The event has been organised to raise funds to help purchase a special prosthetic leg. The Ottobock Genium X3 is a programmable prosthetic with motorized knee and ankle joints. We are hoping this unit will allow Matthew to get his life back on track, by giving him the confidence and independence to participate in the activities of a 19 year old.

About the coast to coast event 22/23rd September 2018:

The event is a cycle ride of volunteers from the west to east coast of England, starting at Silverdale and finishing at Saltburn-by-the-sea.  The route is approximately 110miles, climbing some 5000ft over two days. The group of riders will be supported by a team of volunteer drivers, bike mechanic and Matthew himself.

How can you help?

An Ottobock Genium X3 prosthetic leg costs is in the region of £60,000. Every penny raised will be greatfully appreciated by the participant and the go fund Matthew team. We will try and update the website during the event, subject to mobile network connectivity.

Lastly thank you for reading this lengthy statement as we felt providing you with all the information to help you make your decision is the minimum we can do.

Funding
We are intending to continue raising funds for Matthew, or son over the next year or so. We appreciate that raising £60k is not a one campaign solution.

We are intending to open a savings account for Matthew that can be used to fund his new leg.

If for some reason it is not possible to purchase the advanced Ottobock, or similar prosthetic leg. The fund pot will be paid to Ewing Sarcoma Research. For research into the cancer that Matthew was diagnosed with.

We will update the campaign page with news and informative regarding the money raised and Matthews progress.
