We are Susan van der Woude (Manuel's girlfriend) and Mauricio Gomez (a friend of Manuel) who are organizing this fundraising campaign in order to help Manuel Morgado with his project to complete a Master-2 degree on Condensed Matter and Nanophysics in Strasbourg, France.
Mauricio is currently doing a PhD in physics in Strasbourg, France and is originally from Venezuela. I am doing a PhD in physics in Heidelberg, Germany and am originally from the Netherlands.
The funds raised will be used by Mauricio and me to pay things for Manuel like the flight ticket and the health insurance. As soon as Manuel arrives in France and is able to open a French bank account the funds will be transferred to his account for the other expenses.

I am Manuel Morgado, a student who recently obtained his Licentiate degree in Physics at the Universidad Simón Bolívar, in Venezuela. This fundraising campaign is because I have been granted the opportunity to complete the second year of the master programme in Condensed Matter and Nanophysics (M2-MCN) in the novel Quantum Science and Nanomaterials International Graduate School (QMAT) at the University of Strasbourg - France, and I need to gather some funds in order to cover some initial expenses that, on my own, would be impossible with the current situation of my country.
*Admission letter to the Master Programme*
As you may know, the current situation of Venezuela (where I live) is really complicated. The immense quantity of policies and decisions taken by the government, has driven this country into a financial, social and political crisis (ABC - Documentary 2017 ), driving the quality of life around the country to below the minimum necessary levels. Those decisions not only have created dissatisfaction in Venezuelans that has led them to leave the country looking for a better future, but also closing professional opportunities for young physicists who want to continue doing Science. Plus the terrible fact of being victim of the impunity and violence that sadly haunts our people everyday.
As mentioned, I got accepted in the M2-MCN programme of the Engineering and Physics Faculty at the University of Strasbourg. Besides receiving the acceptance letter for the second year of the programme, I have been also granted a fellowship from QMAT titled: “Q-Master Fellowship” for the complete year of study (2018/19) for an amount of euros 7.987,00 including the possibility to continue with doctoral studies. Since the first payment of the fellowship will start in October and for reasons regarding the expiration date of my passport I need to be in France at the end of July or beginning of August. Therefore, I will need to obtain through this campaign most resources to cover the following expenses:
-Flight Ticket (CCS/PAR): € 850 -> $ 988
-Yearly registration in the University of Strasbourg: € 260 € -> $ 302
-Yearly residence Permit and Health Insurance: € 250 € -> $ 291
-Room residence (August + September): € 360 (€180 x2) -> $ 419
-% GofundMe commission: €146 -> $170
This amount results in a total of € 1.866,00 ($ 2.170,00) taking into account that the GoFundMe team charges the user a 8.5% in commission.
Regarding my student experience, I took part in extra-curricular activities, for instance: F-SAE USB, the Undergraduate Astronomy Programme at the CIDA (Mérida, Venezuela) Summer School of Particle Physics at DESY (Hamburg, Germany), Venezuela representation in the International Physicists’ Tournament (IPT 2018) and finally I obtained my degree in the Universidad Simón Bolívar (Venezuela), in March 2018. During the undergraduate programme, I have tailored my skills and knowledge as a Physicist with high level studies. My final thesis project, titled: “Modeling of High Tc superconducting qubits and the response to a set of Universal Quantum Gates” (awarded with “Outstanding” mention) was the motivation that boost me to consider the Quantum Sciences & Nanophysics as a main area of interest to continue doing research contributing to Quantum Information Processing (QIP) field towards to the construction of Quantum Computers & Networks and Quantum devices based in solid-state and optical approaches. Finally, the reason why doing this programme is so important for me, is that it will complement my knowledge related to experimental nanophysics, nanosciences, nanotechnology and electronics allowing me to merge it with my background in QIP and letting me work on the development of new quantum technologies for this field.

Tan pronto Manuel llegue a Estrasburgo y realice la apertura de su cuenta bancaria francesa, los fondos se le serán transferidos para cancelar el resto de los gastos faltantes.

Soy Manuel Morgado un estudiante que recientemente obtuvo el título de Licenciado en Física en la Universidad Simón Bolívar, en Venezuela. Esta campaña de fondos se debe a una oportunidad ofrecida para completar el segundo años de maestría francesa en el área de Materia Condensada y Nanofísica (M2-MCN) en la recientemente creada Escuela Internacional de Graduados de Ciencias Cuánticas y Nanomateriales (QMAT) de la Universidad de Estrasburgo - Francia. Tengo la necesidad de recurrir a esta campaña para cubrir algunos gastos iniciales, que por cuenta propia, sería casi imposible en la actual situación crítica en el país.
Como seguramente sabes, la situación de Venezuela (donde actualmente resido) es realmente complicado. La larga lista de políticas y decisiones tomadas por el gobierno actual, han llevado al país a una crisis financiera, social y política (ABC - Documentary 2017 ) donde la calidad de vida sobre el territorio nacional se encuentra sobre los niveles mínimos necesarios. Estas decisiones no solo han creado insatisfacción y molestia en los Venezolanos, que no solo se han visto forzados en dejar el país en busca de un mejor futuro sino también en cerrando oportunidades profesionales, como por ejemplo a físicos jóvenes que quieren continuar haciendo Ciencia. Adicionalmente al terrible hecho de poder ser víctima de la impunidad y la violencia que tristemente azota nuestro país cada día.
Como mencioné, fui aceptado en el programa M2-MCN de la Facultad de Física e Ingeniería en la Universidad de Estrasburgo. Además de recibir la carta admisión al segundo año del programa, QMAT me ha concedido una beca universitaria “Q-Master Fellowship” para completar el año de académico 2018/19 por una cantidad de euros 7.987,00 incluyendo la posibilidad de continuar con estudios doctorales al concluir con dicha maestría. Debido a que me informaron que el primer pago de la beca comenzará en Octubre y por razones concernientes a la fecha de expiración de mi pasaporte, necesito estar en Francia para finales de Julio - comienzos de Agosto. Por lo tanto, necesitaré contar con fondos obtenidos mediante esta campaña para cubrir los siguientes gastos:
-Ticket de avión (CCS/PAR): € 850 -> $ 988
-Registro anual en la Universidad de Estrasburgo: € 260 € -> $ 302
-Permiso de residencia anual y Seguro de Salud: € 250 € -> $ 291
-Habitación de residencia (August + September): € 360 (€180 x2) -> $ 419

El monto total resulta en € 1.866,00 ($ 2.170,00), tomando en cuenta que el equipo de GoFundMe carga una comisión al usuario de 8.5% aproximadamente.
Durante mi experiencia como estudiante, tomé parte de actividades extracurriculares. Por ejemplo: F-SAE USB, Programa de Universitario de Astronomía en el CIDA (Mérida, Venezuela) , Escuela de Verano de Física de Partículas en DESY (Hamburgo, Alemania), Venezuela representation in the International Physicists’ Tournament (IPT 2018 Gothenbourg, Sweden) y finalmente obtuve mi título en la Universidad Simón Bolívar (Venezuela), en Marzo 2018. A lo largo del pregrado como Físico he cultivado mis habilidades y conocimientos con estudios de alto nivel. Mi tesis final de grado, titulada: “Modelaje de qubits en superconductores de alta Tc y su respuesta a compuertas cuánticas universales.” (aprobada con mención “Sobresaliente”) fue un factor de motivación que me impulsó a considerar Ciencias Cuánticas y Nanofísica como principal area de interés para continuar haciendo investigación, contribuyendo con el campo de Procesamiento de Información Cuántica (PIC), en miras a la construcción de la Computadoras y Redes Cuánticas, y dispositivos Cuánticos basados en enfoques de estado sólido y óptica. Finalmente, la razón por la cual este programa de maestría es tan importante para mi, es que completa los conocimientos relacionados al área experimental de nanofísica, nano ciencias, nanotecnología y electrónica para así enlazarla con mis conocimientos en PIC, de modo que me permita trabajar en el desarrollo de tecnologías cuánticas novedosas para este campo.
