The Martins Go To Mayo

Gracie Martin here. As friends and family, you might be aware that I have battled chronic health issues for much of my life. The predominant issues I deal with are Psoriasis, Psoriatic Arthritis, and Fibromyalgia. As of 2014 I began noticing pain in my lower back and weakness in my legs, which became numbness and - at times - the inability to walk. God has sustained my husband Jacob and I through this in ways only He could! He truly makes a way where there is no way.

Flash forward to 2015 and the Lord has blessed us with a healthy, smiley, joyous baby boy! Baby M has quickly become the best part of our days, and certainly the most wiggly!

Throughout the pregnancy my symptoms became worse, and continued to do so after our son's
delivery. Jacob and I have sought the counsel of many physicians to try and pinpoint exactly what is causing my legs to become as weak as they are, and what is causing the psoriasis on my skin to flare viciously despite many methods of treatment. This results in near debilitating pain, and I am often unable to hold my son to me due to the pain of being touched. It is because of these symptoms I was recently referred to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.

Our initial appointment has been scheduled for Wednesday, December 30th. What we know now is that I am being seen first by the Neurology department, and the team of physicians treating me will develop a plan of action from there. As frustrating as it is for us to have such limited information, we trust the Lord knows exactly what lies ahead for us and are fixing our eyes on Him.

This is where family comes in. We are doing everything we can on our end to save up for this trip, but we simply are in need of help to get to Mayo. Any contribution made will go to cover the cost of travel/lodging, medical consultations and testing, and treatments that may come as a result of any diagnoses made.

I cannot express how thankful we are for your prayerful consideration. We trust in the Lord completely and know He will make a way, and are truly humbled and unbeilievably thankful to have His church to lean on during this time. Thank you all for you prayers, your help, and your support.

We truly love each of you,
Jacob, Gracie, and Baby M.

Hello, Friends!

Thank you all for being so patient with me - it's been a while since I have posted an update.

Jacob and I returned from Mayo Clinic the first of January in much better spirits than when we went. Our visit was amazing! Every person we encountered at the clinic was kind, knowledgable, and truly wanted to help us. After an initial visit and several tests, we spoke with a physician that narrowed down my symptoms to three possible diagnoses and scheduled more testing for early March. When we go back I will undergo several more tests and hopefully a diagnosis will be made. Not much has changed for us practically as we await our return trip, but it is such a blessing to have a trajectory and to know that a diagnosis (which means a treatment plan) is coming soon. We would not have been able to do this without each of you: I cannot express enough gratitude toward all who have continued to pray, support, and help us during this time.

Thank you all, we love you dearly!

Friends and family!

This time next week, Jacob and I will be in Rochester, MN, preparing for my first appointment at Mayo Clinic. We stand in humble, amazed thankfulness at the prayer, love, and support you have shown us. This would not be happening without each of you and we praise God for making a way through you all!

Jacob and I were talking about when we married (going on five years ago - time really does fly!) earlier this evening and recalling the vows we made to one another. We stood before family and dear friends and pledged before the Lord to love and cherish one another for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health for as long as we both shall live. I don't quite know if Jacob knew what he was signing up for at the time, but I have to tell you that he has honored those words continually since the day he spoke them. It hasn't been easy. He has walked beside me through trial, through suffering, and has flat carried me through the year of 2015. We welcomed our sweet son in August of this year, and Jacob has simply been the picture of sacrificial, selfless love to both me and Baby M. I believe this is due to his reliance on the sustaining power of Jesus Christ: I cannot fathom our lives without the presence of our loving and mighty God. He has sustained us both in ways I couldn't have imagined. We continue to place our trust in Him, and know from his Word that he forgives our sins, heals our diseases, and crowns us with His love and compassion.

Regardless of what the next couple of weeks hold for us, we rest secure in the knowledge that Jesus himself goes before us and makes a way - His way - for our lives. It is an unbelievable honor to walk hand in hand with Jacob in this life. Whatever comes our way, we have the grace of God and the company of the other to continue on in joy unspeakable. We also have the amazing friends and family God has appointed to enjoy, and we are so thankful for you!

Jacob, thank you for being my friend for ten years, my husband for five, and the wonderful father to my son. Here's to every year we have left - let's do this.

Good morning, Friends!

Morning cuddles with Baby M seem to be a time of Holy Spirit revelation. I'm going to be honest with you all, friends: this morning I woke up in an almost unbearable amount of pain. The skin on my chest and stomach is cracking and bleeding, shooting pain and weakness down my back, legs, and arms. My sweet husband is taking yet another day off work to help the baby and me, and as he was showering the baby needed to be consoled and - much as he loves his grandmas - 'Mama' was who he needed to help him calm down and sleep. So, mustering up the strength to bear down and lay him on me, he was handed my way and almost immediately concked out. Looking at his sweet, peaceful face, it occurred to me he had no concept of what it was costing me physically to have him lay on my chest, nor did he understand the privilege I felt to have him there. And, ever faithful and never wasting an opportunity, The Lord reminded me of Hebrews 12: "Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the JOY that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”

Just as it is worth it to me to be in pain that my sweet M might sleep, It is the JOY of Jesus Christ, the Son of God and King of Kings to humble himself and die on the cross that we might rest, our eternities secured. I am blessed to know Him, and I pray for each of you that His love and mercy would surround you today.

Thank you all for you love, your prayers, your support, and enduring my ramblings as this trip gets closer.

Love you!

I just wanted to say thank you to all of you again. Between the prayers, support, meals, babysitting, and friends going so far as so come work from my home in order to be around to help, Jacob and I are overwhelmed with gratitude. We are so close to meeting our goal and that simply would not have happened without you all. Because of the provision and faithfulness of God, brought about by many of you, we can rest peacefully knowing that we will be able to make such a difficult yet rewarding trip as the upcoming one to Mayo Clinic. When we return with answers and a pathway to wellness, it will be because of the generosity of each of you and to the praise of God's glory. Thank you!
Sweet Baby M resting peacefully on my lap this afternoon.
