The Mark Waid Legal Defense Fund

My name is Mark Waid. I’m a New York Times-bestselling comics writer. In September of this year, I was sued by one of the perceived leaders of a relentless online harassment movement called “ComicsGate” which I and many comics professionals strongly feel has unfairly and offensively targeted women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ creators working in our industry in an effort to make them feel unwelcome. (You can read more about some perspectives on ComicsGate and its harassment techniques in the Washington Post  and on Inverse.) I firmly believe this lawsuit is an effort to silence those of us who stand up publicly against bigotry and racism and who continue to defend diverse creators from harassment.

If you like, you can learn more about the specifics of the lawsuit at, among other places, the Daily Dot . You can learn more about ComicsGate's tactics  here , here , and (my favorite!) here , and I encourage you to visit my website markwaid.com  for further details.

Even though I am confident that the claims made against me are entirely without merit, lawsuits are time-consuming and very expensive. Still, I have never backed down from bullies, especially those who denigrate my friends, colleagues and the values our community stands for, and while I am not a rich man, you have my solemn promise that I will fight this fight no matter the personal cost.

We won't know until this goes before a judge whether or not my ask will be enough to pay my expenses--so feel free to keep donating and sharing. Any excess, if there ends up being any, will be donated to an appropriate anti-harassment campaign and donors will be updated.

If you believe, as I do, that women and people of color deserve to be able to do their jobs—or any job—without being bullied, donate. Stand with me. If you believe that someone's gender or sexual preference should have no bearing on the career they pursue, donate. Send that message.

This isn’t just about me; it's about standing together in the face of bullying. Every day that we don't push back against online harassment, it only becomes nastier and more powerful. For the first week, you could see that much just in the comments section here, which I was eventually forced to close once ComicsGaters went into full attack mode.

This is an important fight. Thank you for having my back.

Hi! One last update, then I'll let you get back to your dinner:

Today my lawyers filed a motion to dismiss as a first step, as well as a legal declaration of my side of this matter. (The trolls in the comments section have done a pretty good job of showcasing what we're up against.) Obviously, I can't answer detailed questions about the case at this early stage, but the two documents are publicly available, will no doubt be widely circulated by the media, and will provide to you, I strongly believe, a more balanced view of the case.

Good lawyers are hella expensive. (I'm in the wrong business.) I never could have afforded even *this* much without the help you've given thus far, so I've come to thank you again. Most people understand that filing even a motion in a case like this with the best lawyers ain't simple or cheap--you don't just go pick up a form at Staples--and there's much more work yet to be done.

So, again, I thank you for your contribution, I promise you that it will be used to push back against harassment, and that I will continue to keep you updated with developments. Together, you've made a hell of a statement about our willingness to fight against ComicsGate's bigotry and transphobia in what should be an inclusive medium.

Sorry to update you twice in one morning, but two important things I wanted to mention.

One, money's still coming in--wow. That's great. That means that donors realize this is about something bigger than one lawsuit, something we can fight together.

Two, I'm finding reliable guidance even now in choosing an appropriate anti-harassment fund to donate to in the event there are any funds left when the legalities end. It will be several months before the court rules anything (the wheels of justice grind slowly), so we won't know for some time to come if my expenses exceed the cumulative donation--but if they don't, I'll donate appropriately and update you all. Thanks again.

Funded. I couldn't possibly fight this ugly fight without the support of good fans, good friends, and people eager to push back against bigotry and racism. Feel free to keep sharing--everything helps, and while this may or may not cover my legal fees in the end, it keeps me solvent while we fight what will still be a very long battle. In the event any funds are left over when all is said and done, I'll make a donation to an appropriate charity such as the Hero Initiative--we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

I thank you each and every one. Be proud of yourselves for taking a stand against online harassment, have a terrific weekend, and feel free to keep sharing.

Best,
MW

Some of you may be surprised at the amount of harassment and “Mark Waid non-fan fiction” being posted in the GoFundMe comments section. I’m reasonably sure that most GFMs don’t attract trolls.

(Here’s a short list of the things I’ve learned about myself by reading the comments: Apparently, I’m a millionaire. Evidently, I was once in business with an African-American woman. I'm surprised to learn that I made some phone calls to some unnamed university in Scotland and got a woman thrown out three weeks before graduation--AND drove her unnamed husband to three suicide attempts. AND it turns out I had a wife, so screw all of you for not sending me a wedding gift. There’s so much more, I’m tempted to publish it as an anthology stretch goal.)

I’ve deleted exactly one ugly comment, aimed at others. The rest, I’m leaving untouched so you can see for yourself the sort of hate and harassment I’m having to lawyer up against--and *I’m a straight white man.* This is nothing compared to what women, people of color, and the LGBTQ+ community receive every day from ComicsGate’s representatives. Think about that.

Read their comments. Pay attention to the language. It's important to see for yourselves how these people react and what fiction they’ll throw at you when you take a stand against bigotry and for inclusivity. When you object to Black writers being called "race hustlers" whose writing is a "minstrel show." When you call people out for comparing transgender people to "dog-faced boys" at the carnival "freak show." When you object to women in any industry being accused of being hired "because BEWBS" and unqualified as a gender. I’m fighting a lawsuit that I strongly believe is designed to silence anyone who speaks out against that sort of prejudice. I'm fighting back. Please donate and PLEASE keep sharing. Let's send a clear message that online harassment is unacceptable. Thank you.
