The Gootjes family, in Quispamsis, is a family you may know. If you’ve been involved with hockey, you’ve probably seen them at a rink! Jan and Jim’s three beautiful girls, Marissa, Maddy and Charlotte, are all minor hockey players.
With the same strength and fierceness she shows on ice, Marissa, 14, is fighting a huge battle.
Within two weeks, she went from being a typical grade 9 student, to having a brain tumour discovered and removed (and was out of ICU within a day, like the champ she
Is!).
It has been confirmed that her tumour was malignant. Marissa, with the amazing support of her family, will be beginning treatments next week, for an extended period of time, at the IWK. Travel, within and outside of Canada, for trials is also a good possibility.
The family faces extended absences from home and the costs associated with that. In addition, when Marissa comes home, her immune system will be severely compromised. As such, some testing is occurring in their home and some upgrades are required.
In addition to rocking it on the ice, Marissa has been in Girl Guides AND an active member of the Triple C club in middle school, a club whose sole purpose is to help others!
It’s time for us to show her that same kind of love!!
