On May 6th, 2018, Maria Alicia Medina, my mother, was walking via sidewalk from a local shopping center in Cape Coral, Florida when she was struck by an SUV. The impact and outcomes are simple: a car moving 40+ MPH struck and dragged her 30ft. This resulted in numerous and severe life threatening injuries. The absolute brutality and severity of her injuries should be clear given the situation, but some realities are that she required 70+ units of blood, 5 life saving surgeries, and 21 days of 24hr care to even get her where she is now.
The criminal investigation into the full situation continues, both through the local Police Department as well as through a private investigator. At the time, a drunk driver was arrested and is now out on bail. There are a number of local news pieces which have run in gruesome detail on local air as well as on the web. The video of the impact was run and sensationalized, adding further insult to injury.
Alicia has been in the Trauma ICU at Lee Memorial Hospital in Ft. Myers since May 6th and the path to recovery and rehabilitation will be very very long. She will not be able to take her first step for 3 months, and remains delirious, exhausted, and in constant pain. Despite that, she winks at the nurses and finds moments to inject humor and sarcasm into every moment she can. This is her personality, this is her spirit, and we need every bit of help to get her back.
Those of you who have met my mom know that she is the brightest light who brings humor, joy, and unconditional love to everyone she meets. I am asking everyone who can to please contribute and help provide my mom the best care and to give us a chance to see her light up the room again.
The extent of and sheer quantity of the Physical, Occupational, and Brain/Speech therapy she will require will rapidly exhaust the obligations of her insurance and we will incur significant out of pocket costs to ensure she is given the best chance to be herself again. She will also be on disability for a significant period of time, resulting in lost wages and limited income.
We need about 4x the amount of therapy that her insurance can provide and these costs are not insignificant. Please find it in your heart to help me get my mom back and to make sure the world doesn't lose one of its brightest lights.

El pasado 6 de mayo, del 2018, mi madre Maria Alicia Medina fue golpeada por un vehículo SUV mientras caminaba por la acera al regresar de un centro comercial en Cape Coral, FL. El resultado del impacto es así de crudo: el vehiculo que se conducía a casi 40 MPH la arrastro 30 pies causando multiples y severas lesiones. La brutalidad y gravedad de heridas y fracturas son obvias pero la realidad es que ha requerido mas de 70 unidades de sangre, 5 cirugías para salvarle la vida y 21 días de cuidado intensivo.
La investigación criminal del hecho continua, tanto a traves del departamento de policía local como también a través de un investigador privado. Al momento del accidente, el conductor ebrio fue arrestado y esta ahora libre bajo fianza. Hay numerosas piezas noticiosas que han dado a conocer los horribles detalles de este accidente, tanto en la web como en la TV. El video del impacto circulo con sensacionalismo y, con terrible crueldad ha anadido dolor y pena a nuestra familia.
Alicia ha permanecido en la Unidad de Trauma y Cuidados Intensivos de Lee Memorial Hospital en Ft Myers, desde mayo 6 y el camino para su recuperación y rehabilitación sera muy, muy largo. Ella está en dolor constante, esta muy débil, agotada y quiza podrá dar sus primeros pasos hasta dentro de 3 meses. A pesar de su estado, ella hace guinos de ojos a las enfermeras e inyecta humor o sarcasmo cuando puede. Así es ella, ese es su espíritu y por eso necesitamos un poco de ayuda para que ella pueda regresar completamente y ser la de siempre.
Todos ustedes que han conocido a mi mama saben que ella es una luz brillante que siempre trae consigo humor, apoyo y amor incondicional a todo el que conoce. Estoy solicitando a cada uno de los que la conocen que ayuden monetariamente, para que mi mama pueda recibir el mejor cuidado y de esta forma ella pueda volver a llenarnos de luz y ser quien es.
Alicia requerirá un extensivo y largo tratamiento de recuperación. La terapia ocupacional, terapia cognitiva y de lenguaje seran rápidamente agotadas por los limites que indica su seguro de salud; somos nosotros los que tendremos que absorber los elevados costos de su recuperación total, a fin de que ella pueda tener mayor probabilidades de volver a ser quien es. Ella estará incapacitada por un largo periodo de tiempo lo cual implica perdida de sus ingresos y salario.
En este momento requerimos 4 veces el costo de de la terapia que su seguro de salud puede brindarle y estos costos son muy, muy altos. Por favor, toquen su corazón y en la medida de sus posibilidades ayudenme a devolverle a mi mama la calidad de vida que ella merece.
