Please help me complete my memoir!
"Margie Newman’s essays are powerful, raw, and despite their subject, often humorous. Hers is a truly unique and insightful voice." Rebecca Kanner, author of "Sinners and the Sea" and "Esther."
PLEASE HELP ME GET MY STORY OUT
INTO THE WORLD
My name is Margie Newman. You may have read some of my work online , or maybe you've heard me at a reading.
Now is the time for me to finish my memoir, The Thing is to Always Be Ready, find a publisher, and get it out into the hands of readers.
I've been at work at this project for years and have much written, but haven't had the sustained time I need to complete the book and find a publisher. This is where Go Fund Me comes in. I'm raising money to buy the time I need.
The Thing is to Always Be Ready is about growing up as my father's daughter. My father, David Newman, of blessed memory, survived the Nazi ghettos, labor camps, and the notorious Buchenwald. His entire family, save for one brother, was murdered in the death camp Belzec. My father came through with his life, but in many ways, for him, the Holocaust was never over.
My book is the story of trying to straddle the worlds of trying to be an American kid that fit in, and hearing my father scream in the night as he dreamed about my sister and being with him as he was chased into the gas chamber.
It's the story of me unraveling my father's stories and his silences, and of the struggle to find balance between living in the present and honoring the past.
I would so appreciate any contribution you could make towards allowing me to complete my book.
My GoFundMe campaign is concluded. To everyone who's donated funds, provided rewards, expressed their support, and nagged me to write, thank you again and again! If you have a reward due to you, I'll be sending them out in the next couple of weeks.
You can still nag me to write; there's no close date for that.
Please consider making any contribution that feels right for you if you haven't already. This site will come down on Monday, Sept. 19, 2016.
I hope you can join me at Urban Forage on Thursday. Anita and Wallace White's art show will be up. There will also be rewards on display, including oil paintings by Paul Damon, marbled paper by Susan Damon, print by Anita White, and freeze-frames by Tim Jennen.
Jeff's Urban Forage cider and wine will be available for purchase. It's the best cider I've ever had.
Much gratitude again to everyone who has helped me on this campaign to get my book out into the world <3
My campaign's been up for almost a month now. Thank you again to everyone who's backing me in my project!
I still have aways to go before reaching my goal. I tweeted to Taylor Swift asking her to fund me. Surprisingly, she didn't respond....
On the bright side (very bright side,) a young man named Werner in Germany who heard about my GoFundMe through a friend is working on getting his town (a Sister City to St. Paul) to support my project. He feels it's vital that his generation of Germans work to keep the memory of the Shoah alive.
You can make up for Tay-Tay's shortsightedness!
Sublime art by Tim Jennen, Paul Damon, Anita White and others await. Also signed copies of books, including authors Rebecca Kanner, Mai Neng Moua, Rachael Hanel and several first editions including a "Leaves of Grass." (Check out the ""Wish List" on my page-these are the rewards.)
Best regards and thank you again and again!
Artist Anita White recently donated a beautiful linoleum print to my campaign as a reward. The photo doesn't do the print justice, but you can get a hint of its beauty. This lilac print is a reward for a donation at the $100 level.
Thank you, Anita, and to everyone who's contributed funds and helped spread the word !
