Marcus VS. Aplastic Anemia

Donation protected
Marcus Dileo-Vereen is a bright young student and athlete. He has many aspirations for his life. He is a senior in high school with exceptional grades. He is a star athlete in not one but three sports. He has already been accepted to many colleges. His life and his goals are now being put on hold due to a medical illness.

Marcus was having troubles with headaches for several weeks. His mother had taken him to the doctor to be examined through blood tests. The next day his mother received an urgent call from the doctor that he had to be taken to the hospital immediately and there was a team already awaiting his arrival. After many tests including a bone marrow biopsy and days of waiting, Marcus was diagnosed with Idiopathic Aplastic Anemia. Aplastic Anemia is a rare disease in which the bone marrow and the hematopoietic stem cells that reside there are damaged. This causes a deficiency of all three blood cell types: red, white, and platelets.

His best chance for survival is a bone marrow transplant. To receive a transplant, Marcus needs to find a bone marrow donor. SInce he does not have a full sibling, this is a very difficult task for the doctors.  In the meantime, he is receiving blood and platelet transfusions, which is very hard on his body. However, he can only receive so many transfusions before it starts hurting his healthy organs. He has currently had several.

These funds will help his family stay strong while Marcus fights this battle. His parents are missing out on numerous days of work, without pay, to stay by his side and take him to multiple doctor’s appointments. Unfortunately, these appointments are not all local. There is gas back and forth and outrageous parking fees. If and when a bone marrow match is found, he spending two or months in the hospital. The hospital that will perform this procedure will not be local for the family.

Marcus is receiving many blood transfusions and he and his family are responsible for replenishing the blood he takes. You can help by donating blood in his honor using his group number: 7963.

You can donate at a blood bank in your area. Also, the doctor’s have yet to find a bone marrow match. You can help by registering to be a bone marrow donor at BETHEMATCH.ORG. The test is as simple as a few cheeks swabs.

Marcus is losing blood fast and less than 5% of his bone marrow is functioning to produce more blood. He is unable to attend high school full time, he can only make it through a couple hours a day. He has to walk around with a mask of his face to protect him from any infections. Any and all help is greatly appreciated and no donation is too small. Marcus deserve a full and happy life.
