UPDATE - May 7th: Not everyone has followed the updates , so here it is.... Marc received his new liver on April 28th. He is recovering well and should be released early next week.  In the meantime, Beth is working on getting all the things Marc will need for recovery - shower bars, a walker, etc.  Plus there will be the costs of the drugs for the first little while until the Trillium Drugs Benefit Plan is approved.  You can read the latest updates at www.marcsnewliver.com

Sincere thanks to everyone who has helped out so far.  It is really appreciated - every little bit helps with hotel rooms, gas, etc.  THANK YOU! <3

----------------------------------------------------------------------
As many of you know Marc is in need of a new liver. Despite quitting drinking years ago and having the undying support of his amazing wife, family, and friends he is in for a long process.
Marc and Beth went to London Ontario on March 14th to stay over for his visit to London University Hospital’s Transplant Unit for assessment to see if he was a good candidate for transplant.

Here’s the thing: just because you need a new liver or other organ, doesn’t mean you automatically get on the list. Even if you have a living donor, they can say no.  It’s scary stuff.

First off, Marc went through comprehensive testing.  Physical tests. Psychological tests. Bloodwork, cognitive tests etc. It’s pretty daunting.  They had to check his MELD score – Model for End Stage Liver Disease.  Anyone with a score of 15 or higher is considered for transplant.  Marc was at 16.

On Monday, March 20th Marc got the call!  He had passed all the tests and was officially being put on the transplant list!

There are a few things which need to be considered:

No clue how long it will take to get a new liver.  Marc is blood type O so he has a better shot of getting a liver. The best bet is a living donor.  Meaning someone who will willingly donate half of their liver to Marc (actually it’s 60%).  The healthy liver pieces in both the donor and the recipient (Marc) will grow back to about 90%.  His wife is not an eligible candidate.

It’s going to be expensive.  Anti rejection drugs forever.  As it stands, Marc’s benefits have run out. He has been battling this for some time and has been in and out of hospital (including a medically induced coma).
So even though Marc is on the list, it’s still a long, bumpy road ahead.

Please help these wonderful people if you can.

Please sign your donor card.  Even if you’re gone, you could still save a life.
