Manatee Center hurricane recovery

$79,750 of $150,000 goal

Raised by 221 people in 15 months
Created September 21, 2017
Puerto Rico was just devastated by the enormous and powerful hurricane Maria. This also damaged the Puerto Rico Manatee Conservation Center. While its current four patients, Guacara, Aramana, Mabo and Tureygua, are alive and well, the Center is without electricity and its veterinary clinic and laboratory were destroyed. One of its quarentine pools was also damaged.

I am Antonio Mignucci, from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and director of the Puerto Rico Manatee Conservation Center and President of the 501c3 non-profit Red Caribeña de Varamientos. All funds will be deposited directly to the non-profit corporate bank account and used solely to reconstruct the Center as detailed below.

This fund raising seeks funds to (1) buy and install a power generator for the rehab tanks filters, (2) by a walk-in refrigerating half trailer for storing manatee food, (3) rebuild and make functional the manatee veterinary clinic and labs, and (4) repair and re-install the quarentine pool.

Puerto Rico is in need of lots of help until we get off the ground. Puerto Rican manatees also need this help, to survive as an endangered species, but also with a functional rehab center to care for those that need rescue and veterinary care.

Six months ago, we informally inaugurated our new installation, after the serious damages caused by Hurricane María on 20 September 2017.

We are immensely grateful to all who made this possible after two and a half months of hard work to finish construction in these difficult times.

First of all, the reconstruction was done by 15 constructions workers from the small town of Corozal, Puerto Rico, who in the middle of post hurricane María accepted the challenge to work for us in the midst of reconstructing their own houses back at home. They also were extra amicable and diligent with our “changes of order” without affecting their work schedule and initial quote. We thank them dearly.

The laboratory reconstruction was funded by a special assignment from the President of the Inter American University and the Chancellor of the Bayamón Campus, contributions from the Georgia Aquarium, Dallas World Aquarium, Pittsburg Zoo, Columbus Zoo Conservation Fund, Academy Award Winner Benicio del Toro, Johnny Morris’ Wonders of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium, Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Sirenian Symposium participants, Save the Manatee Club, Microsoft Corporation, Sirenian colleagues around the globe, and private donors. To this we must add equipment and supplies donated by Pentair, Amgen, Georgia Aquarium, the Manatee Rescue & Rehabilitation Partnership (Sea World, Lowry Park Zoo, Miami Seaquarium, Cincinnati Zoo, Columbus Zoo, Disney’s Living Seas, Mote Marine Laboratory, Jacksonville Zoo, South Florida Museum, FWCC Marine Mammal Path Lab, Sirenia Project, UF Veterinary School, Dallas World Aquarium, Sea to Shore, Fish and Wildlife Service, Homosassa State Park), Modernica, and a Puerto Rican veterinarian now in Texas who was a volunteer of the Center in 2000. But above all, over 800 donors through this GoFundMe campaign.

Thanks to all of you, we now can operate a laboratory, veterinary clinic, and a “Café du l’Chuga” (lettuce commissary) for manatees and other aquatic fauna.

We have pending reconstructing the manatee aquaponic farm (for growing natural aquatic vegetation as manatee food) and the quarantine tanks, which were also destroyed. For this, we have already received a grant and partial funding from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Inter American University and the Toyota Foundation (30% of the total cost). This will be a 2018 construction project.

Aramana, Tureygua, Guacara, Mabo (manatees), Captain and Major (kestrels) and Coco (a pelican) are doing good. Aramana are set to be released in October 2018 and Tureygua in 2019.

We felt your presence and support throughout this ordeal, not only financially or with your in-kind donations, but with your moral and emotional support and words of encouragement and positive outlook. Gracias, gracias, gracias.
