Making memories to last a lifetime

Donation protected
After tripping & falling whilst taking the kids out on bonfire night 2014, aged 42, Alan knew that something was badly wrong. He was referred to a neurologist and diagnosed with MND. He was given 2 to 5 years to live. MND is a rapidly progressive neurological illness that affects the brain & spinal column, it affects the muscles leaving people locked into their own body unable to move, talk, swallow and eventually unable to breathe. There are 5000 people with MND in the UK at any one time. There is no cure.

Alan is now entering his fifth year after MND diagnosis and is quadriplegic, confined to an electric wheelchair full time. He has software to talk for him as he has lost nearly all his speech and he is fed through a tube.  Alan requires 24/7 care to feed and maintain his feeding tube, to dress, toilet & to wash him which is provided by his wife and three kids. They want Alan to have a life that’s as normal & as dignified as possible and I am amazed at how the children undertake their caring roles whilst still studying.

The NHS are fabulous and have provided many things that Alan needs to maintain a supported, but independent life but there are still lots of things that the family so desperately need but cannot finance. Alan hasn’t been able to work for 3 years & Helen, his wife, works part time around Alan’s care.
I would like to raise funds for the advance payment on a motability wheelchair accessible van (WAV) so that Alan can get out and about with his family.  It’s bad enough that Alan is locked inside his failing body, to think of him confined to the house for his remaining time unable to join family activities is heartbreaking. Helen now sleeps on a child’s bed squeezed in next to Alan’s hospital bed so that she’s there to reposition him frequently throughout the night, until recently they hadn’t slept apart in 27 years, I’d love to be able to fund a double profiling bed for them as Alan doesn’t sleep well without her. Finally, I’d love to treat the children to one last holiday together with their dad in an adapted place where Alan will be safe.

The children are going to face the rest of their lives without their dad, it’s my wish to help them all create enough memories to last a lifetime.
