Making Humbled Happen

I got a great opportunity to participate in an arts incubator project at Synchronicity Theater and to premiere some of my work.
In order to create the kind of piece that I envision, I need your help!
There are a few things that I need to pay for in order to see Humbled really come to life:
A wood floor ($1,100)
-This is definitely necessary for "Humbled," but is an investment for my career, my artistry, and my opportunities.
Two Musicians ($500)
-Live music is necessary for this project, but I also believe in paying artists for the time, work, and sharing their craft.
Costuming ($200)
-In order to fully embody the energy that this piece calls for I am taking advantage of the opportunity to exchange and work with as many local artists as possible, including a very talented designer
With your help, I can establish relationships and get ahold of resources that will benefit me for years to come. Anything that you can spare is worth it and gets me a little bit closer to my goal!

Humbled
An hour long tap dance performance piece that explores the ways that labor and ritual overlap, creating community and undoing boundaries. The performance focuses on the understanding that in black and queer communities, ritual, care, and possibility call for continuous labor. In an interactive performance, Humbled tests the endurance of the performer, and uncovers the power in withstanding circumstance and embracing identity to create new spaces that keep pushing toward something more, something beyond, something other.
This project is an exploration of ritual and how it can honor certain spaces and individuals in our lives and challenges the idea that despite the fact that ritual typically occurs in a particular time in a certain space that it is has reverberating effects that reach outside of the that one time and space. This piece seeks to communicate a boundlessness to human possibility as it boldly proclaims blackness and queerness as valuable sources of strength and power. Much of the material for spoken word, here, comes from famous black women poets, authors, and songwriters who have harnessed intensely beautiful and honest language; therefore, this piece is designed to hold up the words of marginalized populations to demonstrate the ways in which they have been dismissed but actually act as impassioned and brazen examples of love and resistance.
