While travelling in East Africa we made a stopover on the lovely island of Zanzibar, just in front of the Tanzanian coast.  Like on our stops before, we went couchsurfing here as well. Our host is Mdimu, a Zanzibarian who lives together in a small house with a group of friends, all of them acrobats. During the past week we got a deep insight into their lives.

Ndimu spent his youth on the streets of Dar es Salaam, by far the largest city in Tanzania, where he started doing acrobatics. After becoming more professional after a while, he went to find more opportunities to Zanzibar. Practicing every day on the beach in Jambiania, he gathered a group of like-minded boys around him. All of them grown up in rather basic circumstances or even on the street.

With time passing by and the group getting more professional, they got engagements for acrobatic shows at two hotels. The tips earned during these shows are used to pay for housing and food. Nevertheless it's still a basic life they live.

To the moment they perform these shows without any official registration. As they are becoming more known in the area, Mdimu is afraid of getting into legal trouble. To avoid this he plans to register the group as a NGO. Unfortunately this registration comes with high costs (300 €), which the group can't bear by themselves.

Now here comes the point, we are getting involved. Us, that is Christina & Carlos from Barcelona (Spain), Johanna & Niklas from Cologne and Manuel from Hamburg (Germany).We were couchsurfing at their place the last days and spent all the days with them. We got the chance to see their shows and how hard they practice every day. Their story touched our hearts so we decided to help them.

With your help we could easily pay the registration fees. We will be with them the coming week as well and can hand over the money and register their NGO together with them.

Auf unserer Reise durch Ostafrika haben wir einen Zwischenstop auf der Insel Zanzibar vor der Küste Tanzanias gemacht. Wie auch schon zuvor auf der Reise sind wir am couchsurfen. Dabei haben wir Mdimu und seine Freunde kennengelernt, eine Gruppe von acht Akrobaten, bei denen wir die letzten Tage gewohnt und mit denen wir viel Zeit verbracht haben.

Ndimu hat in seiner Jugend auf den Straßen Dar es Salaams mit Akrobatik angefangen. Als er mit der Zeit immer besser wurde, kehrte er in seine Heimat Zanzibar  zurück und begeisterte mit seinen Tricks am Strand von Jambiani weitere Jungs, sich ihm anzuschließen. Alle kommen aus sehr einfachen Verhältnissen und lebten zuvor zum Teil auf der Straße.

Jambiani ist ein vom Tourismus stark geprägter Ort. Daher gelang es der Gruppe nach einiger Zeit, zwei Hotels für Showauftritte zu gewinnen. Durch die bei diesen Auftritten eingenommenen Trinkgelder der Touristen kann sich die Gruppe ein einfaches Haus und Verpflegung leisten. 

Bislang tritt die Gruppe ohne offizielle Registrierung auf.  Mit dem steigendem Bekanntheitsgrad befürchtet Mdimu aber Probleme mit den Behörden. Um dem zu entgehen und gefahrlos weitere Hotels ansprechen zu können, ist nun die offizielle Registrierung als NGO/Charity geplant. Diese ist leider mit hohen Kosten (300 €) verbunden und kann so nicht von der Gruppe gestemmt werden.

Und hier kommen wir ins Spiel: Wir, eine Gruppe von vier Couchsurfern (Carlos & Christina aus Barcelona, Johanna & Niklas aus Köln und Manuel aus Hamburg), haben die vergangenen Tage mit der Gruppe zusammen gewohnt und mit eigenen Augen gesehen, wieviel Herzblut die Jungs in ihre Arbeit stecken und wieviel sie mit ihren Anstrengungen schon erreicht haben. Dabei wurden wir so herzlich aufgenommen, dass wir etwas zurückgeben und die Jungs bei der offiziellen Registrierung unterstützen möchten.

Mit eurer Hilfe könnten wir die Gebühren für die Registrierung bezahlen. Wir sind auch die kommende Woche noch hier und können die gespendete Summe persönlich übergeben und die Registrierung mit den Jungs gemeinsam vorantreiben.

Mientras viajábamos por el este de África paramos en la encantadora isla de Zanzíbar, justo en frente de la costa de Tanzania. Igual que en nustros previos destinos, aquí también hicimos couchsurfing. Nuestro anfitrión se llama Ndimu, un Tanzano que vive en una pequeña casa con un grupo de amigos, todos acróbatas. Durante esta última semana hemos estado conociendo mejor sus vidas.

Ndimu pasó su juventud viviendo en las calles de Dar es Salaam, sin duda la ciudad más grande de Tanzania, y allá es donde empezó a hacer acrobacias. Cuando se profesionalizó, se mudó a Zanzíbar, uno de los lugares más turísticos del país. Practicando todos los días en la playa de Jambiani fue como conoció y reunió a un grupo de chicos que, igual que él, habían crecido en circumstancias difíciles o incluso en la calle.

Con el paso del tiempo y con un grupo más establecido consiguieron contratos esporádicos para actuar en dos hoteles. Las propinas ganadas durante los shows las usan para pagar el alquiler de la casa donde viven y la comida. Aun así llevan una vida muy básica.

Hasta el momento están actuando sin ningún registro oficial como grupo/empresa. Como cada vez son más conocidos en la región, Ndimu tiene miedo de tener problemas legales y para evitar esto tiene planeado registrar el grupo como una ONG. Desfortunadamente este registro tiene unos costes muy elevados (300€) que el grupo no puede costear.

Y aquí es donde nosotros nos hemos querido involucrar. Nosotros somos Cristina&Carlos de Barcelona (España), Johanna & Niklas de Cologne y Manuel de Hamburg (Alemania). Hemos estado haciendo couchsurfing la última semana con ellos viviendo como uno más de la familia y hemos tenido la oportunidad de ver sus shows y de ver cómo se esfuerzan entrenando cada día. Su historia nos ha llegado al corazón y por eso hemos decidido ayudarlos.

Con vuestra ayuda podríamos pagar los costes del registro y ayudarles a dar un paso hacia delante. Estaremos unas semanas más aquí con ellos así que podremos darles el dinero en mano y acompañarlos a registrar la ONG.
