Cancer Fighter’s No Quitter: Please Help

My friend Keven Drews has been battling cancer for 14 of the nearly 20 years we have known each other, but he’s now running out of chances, and his only hope is a clinical trial in Seattle, Wash.

Yes: the expected cost is staggering, but Kev’s no quitter, and neither are we—his friends and family.

We’re asking you to help support Kev, his wife and kids as they confront their biggest challenge to date.

Please.

When I first met Kev on the west coast of Vancouver Island in 1996, he was madly in love with his fiancée Yvette (Vet to our family), and was a fit, outdoorsy guy, (former half- and full-marathon runner!), surfer, with a great sense of humor.

Vet, like me, is an Aussie, so we developed an instant bond. She quickly began playing a huge part in helping us out, and with Kev, they became like family.

Too bad tough times were right around the corner.

Kev was diagnosed in 2003 with multiple myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells, and has since stomached the rollercoaster ride of cancer treatments, remissions and relapses.

A few years later, Kev and Vet withstood the sometimes heartbreaking and costly attempt to conceive and were finally blessed in 2010 with twins, Tristan and Elleree—total sweeties. Tristan is on the autism spectrum, which pushed the family from Vancouver Island’s west coast to Metro Vancouver for more-accessible services.

Kev’s cancer treatment continued in Vancouver, though his latest myeloma therapy is failing.

His last chance will likely be a clinical trial that’s developing CAR T cell therapy. The treatment would see workers remove from his body and then re-engineer in a lab T cells, the immune system’s killer cells, before infusing them back into his blood stream to attack the cancer.

For Kev to participate, we need to raise at least US$500,000. Because Kev has no private insurance in the U.S., he’ll have to deposit the money to cover anticipated costs before treatment can begin.

It seems like a staggering amount, but I believe we have the confidence and passion to do it.

Remember: every little bit counts.

Keep watching this and his Mad at Myeloma Facebook page for updates.

For now, Kev’s on medical leave from The Canadian Press news service. Vet is a teacher working with students with special needs in Surrey. The twins are in elementary school, doing well.

Help Kev live. Help him in the fight of his life.

Hi all,
Thank you all so much for your support, both financial and moral. It's been a tough time. The latest news is that Keven will not be well enough to participate in the clinical trial in Seattle. We had been counting on provincial funding to put us at the point where we could see achieving our ambitious fundraising goal, but learned before Christmas that the application was refused. This was a harsh blow and Keven's condition has deteriorated since. You can get his latest update on his page Mad at Myeloma.
There have been expenses of course, getting to this point. The initial trip to Seattle, the ongoing trips to hospital, medications, etc. There are family expenses, now and into the future. We are hopeful that all who have donated to date are comfortable with their donations being used to help offset these costs going forward. Between this account and the CIBC account, together we have raised approximately $40,000. Thank you! If you are not comfortable with your donation being used for these costs, or if you have any questions on specifics of expenditures, please send me a message. Again, sincere thanks from Keven and family.

So Keven and Yvette went to Seattle for their initial consult. It definitely didn't sound like a fun time. Kev will post more on his Mad at Myeloma page. Now there's more tests before we get news of acceptance, and/or government funding. Huge thanks to all of you supporting. Between the gofundme page and the CIBC account we are just over $40,000.

Thrilled to see donors are trying to access our "Fundraising Account for Keven Drews". We didn't think people would need the actual account info, but if you do, here it is: transit #02040 a/c # 54-78014. Our friend Cheryl and her young son Cullen from Tofino collected donations instead of presents for his 6th birthday and will be topping up our CIBC account. Thanks friends!

Well two weeks to the day since we launched our campaign and we're awed with over $30,000 raised. Thank you all so much! Kev has a date for his consultation, November 29 will see him off to Seattle to visit the clinical trial centre. We don't know if there will be a need for more consultations, and the not knowing is tough on all. So grateful for the cushion of funding that will help make this trip a little easier. We have also set up a CIBC account in the name of "Fundraiser for Keven Drews", donations can be made at your local branch, or you can mail a cheque to Box 1382, Ucluelet. BC V0R 3A0. Huge thanks to our Ucluelet branch for their help, and their generous donation to open the account on Friday. In the meantime, we keep thinking on fundraising initiatives, it's a hard time of year to fundraiser for sure, and we lend our positive thoughts to November 29. Go Kev!
