Micah's Journey with Club Feet

Donation protected

March 4th, 2014 proved to be a thrilling day for us, we found out we were expecting! We had been trying, and we knew everything was going to be perfect. In June, we had an ultrasound, and the technician asked us if we had any family history of club feet. I hadn't even heard of it, and my husband Brad knew nothing of it either. Our 6 year old daughter's feet were perfectly fine. We brushed it off and didn't give it another thought. I wish we had, or had prepared. October 23rd, at 10:30 pm, my water broke, 4 days before my scheduled Cesarean section. The next day, the 24th, Micah made his arrival! It was a boy! We were ecstatic.  He was healthy and perfect, although it was noted he had bilateral club feet, and would need further treatment. We still weren't giving it much thought, still on the high of welcoming a new baby. We scheduled an appointment with our local pediatric orthopedic. Micah began treatment on November 18th, at 3 weeks old. He received his first set of casts, and went through 4 more before having his  tendonotomy surgery at 9 weeks old. This surgery was one of the hardest things we've had to go through, handing your baby over to surgeons, knowing he's going to have the backs of his heels cut open, knowing he's going to be put to sleep. The worry made us sick, and I cried and cried. He came out of the surgery great, and healed quickly, with only two more castings. Currently he is in his boots and bar, leather boots on his feet and ankles, with straps and buckles, and a metal bar between them to keep his feet turned out at a 60 degree angle. The sleepness nights, him fussing over it, and the foreign click of metal and boots on his feet are tough things to deal with. On top of this, our insurance doesn't cover all of his treatment, the scans, and the xrays that were needed for his treatment. I am a proud person who likes to get things done myself, and we want to care for our family. But, we need help. I have set this account up for those who wish to donate, help, and keep up with Micah's story as we travel through this journey together.

I am working on starting a blog about his journey as well. He will be in the boots and bar until he's four years old and there is always the looming risk of relapse. But, we will remain strong.
