On 20th June 2018, our tiny world fell apart when we received the news that no parent wants to hear, “your daughter has a brain tumour.”

Our daughter Hollie, who is 13, was a very happy, healthy and sporty young girl until approximately a year ago when we noticed a gradual decline in her health and ability. The resulting tests and MRI identified a rare brain tumour - Hypothalamic Hamartoma.

Hollie’s decline in health has accelerated as the tumour impacts on her cognitive ability in addition to different types of seizures.  Even with anti-seizure medication she continues to experience around twelve seizures daily.  The uncontrolled seizures and difficulties in her cognitive learning and memory have had a catastrophic impact on her life, particularly as a teenage girl with her whole life ahead of her.

There is a curable brain surgery but unfortunately this is not available in the UK on the NHS. We refuse to accept this and after our own research, we have recently been given the good news that Hollie is a suitable candidate for surgery in Texas Children’s Hospital, USA. Without this surgery Hollie will never be able to lead a normal life and this is why we find ourselves in the uncomfortable position of asking for help as the surgery comes at a huge cost.

We are determined to secure the best possible treatment for Hollie and we will do everything we can in addition to this page to fundraise. As a family we would like to thank you in advance for any help you can give us along this journey.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you require any further information.

As this year comes to an end, we would like to express a sincere and heartfelt thank you to everyone for their support and kindness since sharing our story on 7th October. As the new year begins, we want to give our thanks for the wonderful opportunity that has been created for Hollie in a few weeks time due to the goodwill, generosity and genuine thoughtfulness of the local and wider community. Thanks to the amazing fundraising and time given by so many people in making this possible for Hollie, we now have surgery confirmed in January, an astonishing three months after asking for help. This is a truly unbelievable timescale in which you have made this possible.
For us as a family this has been a whirlwind experience in such a short period of time, still having to pinch ourselves to believe this has really happened. As we are now closing this GoFundMe page that has met and exceeded our target, and prepare Hollie for the next stage of her journey, we want everyone to know how eternally grateful we are for all of the kind messages and comments. Every single good wish, words of encouragement, and comments from people we know and people we have never met, have given us great reassurance and determination in helping us through this emotional time. We are very positive and optimistic as a result of what we have experienced and witnessed in the vast support and sheer goodwill of both friends and strangers in recent months. As we set off to Houston we know we face great challenges that come with brain surgery, and for Hollie this is naturally a worrying time. As the reality hits us we are experiencing mixed emotions of both excitement and anxiety with the prospect of this very complex operation so far away from home. We ask that you continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers as we approach this next step in the coming fortnight. We will continue to keep everyone updated on Hollie's progress through the Facebook page.
We would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and thank you all for the opportunity you have given us at the start of our new year. Thank you for making this possible.

Miracles do Happen!!!

Miracles do happen as the somewhat impossible has now become the possible. As a family we have been through every emotion in the last 19 days and now today, 26th October 2018, these emotions have been taken to yet another level by the sheer goodwill of kind-hearted people. Not only have we reached our target, we have exceeded it beyond expectation. Almost 3 weeks ago we shared our story and hoped for the best with fingers crossed and a let’s see what happens approach. Now in less than 3 weeks, we are able to give Hollie this wonderful opportunity to potentially change the rest of her life. We hope to now get a date for Hollie’s Laser Ablation surgery in America early in the New Year. This is much sooner than we ever imagined possible and Hollie will hopefully be back on the road to recovery and back to her active and normal life. This is what we hoped for more than anything!!

Since sharing our story, we have been moved every single day by the smallest and largest. From a young girl in Primary School who gave her pocket money in an envelope to the fundraising events and the huge donations …..…everything has meant so much to us.

In addition to this, with the huge donations that have come in today, we are overwhelmed with joy at the prospect of now helping others too. We know there are lots of fundraising events planned that so many people have dedicated a huge amount of time and effort into organising. We have worried what to do about this, but feel that the love and support shown to us by our local community and further afield is something we are now committed to continuing by passing on to others.
We have been touched by the generosity of various local charities that we want to replicate. The funds raised above our target will be passed on in helping other local families with a brain tumour diagnosis, families having to seek treatment outside of the UK, and the Hope for Hypothalamic Hamartoma (HH) Charity.

The generosity and goodwill has restored our faith in human nature. The number of cards and messages that had gathered this week while Hollie was in Manchester Children’s Hospital is unbelievable. People we don’t even know have said the nicest of things that have given us great encouragement and determination. Our hearts are bursting.

The past few days have been an incredible journey for our family. Only last week we had just been contacted by Texas children's hospital with confirmation of Hollie's eligibility for laser ablation surgery. Then, on Saturday night a wonderful family drove up from Dublin to share their story of what they had been through. Their son, had been diagnosed with the same HH tumour 10 years ago and went to the USA where he successfully had surgery. Now in his early twenties, this inspiring young man, leads  a fantastic life and he personally  encouraged us to share our story. The next day we did.
And now........
just a few days later, as you can see, the response has been phenomenal. For the rest of our lives we will be grateful for this week and everything that everyone has done for us. The kind words shared will remain with us forever.
As a family we cannot thankyou enough for what has been an amazing start to this journey.
