John Jack Courtenay of Middletown, New York a Police Officer for the Village of Chester, New York Police Department for 20 plus years, died on July 18, 2018, at his residence after a lengthy illness. Jack was 47 years of age.

The son of the late Lt. Robert and Margaret Courtenay, he was born in Warwick, New York, on July 16, 1971.

Jack was raised in Chester, New York, growing up in Surrey Meadows, where he made a lifetime of memories. After graduating high school and working at a local distributor, Jack found his true calling, following in his grandfather and father’s footstep of civil service, “To Protect and Serve”.

Jack started his career as a Police Officer in 1996, with the Town of Chester Police Department. In 2001, he transferred to the Village of Chester Police Department, where he retired after 20 years of service. He was a member of the Chester Volunteer Fire Department, Walton Engine and Hose Company. He also served as President of the Fire Company.

Jack was an amazing father to his 3 daughters and was a wonderful husband. He was a hard worker. He had the kindest of hearts, and an uncanny ability to give advice to others as they proceeded on their own path of life. Even though his illness to his health, it didn’t take his sense of humor or his love of his family and friends.

Although he moved to Middletown, NY in 2004, Jack continued to stay fully devoted to the Chester Community, his life, his roots. The Police and Fire Departments families have always been an important part of his life and will be as important in his death, … to him, his wife and daughters.

Jack is survived by his wife, Tara at home and their children Theresa, Meaghan, and Jackie all at home. His siblings Robert Courtney of Chester, NY, Steven Courtenay of Middletown and Susan Courtney of Chester, NY, along with his nieces and nephews Jessica, Breeanna, Kyrie, Zachery, Brittney, Daniel, Courtney, and Faith.

Visitation will be held on Monday, July 23, 2018, during the hours of 3:00 to 5:00 PM and 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Flynn Funeral & Cremation Memorial Centers, Inc., located at 139 Stage Road, Monroe, New York 10950.

Police and Firematic Services will be held at the Funeral Home, at 7:15 PM & 7:30 PM on Monday, July 23, 2018.

A Funeral Mass will be offered on Tuesday, July 24, 2018, at 11:00 AM in St. Columba R.C. Church, located at 27 High Street, Chester, New York 10918.

Cremation will follow at Oxford Hills Crematory, Inc., Chester, NY

It has been specifically requested that in lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions in Jack’s memory be made to The Corrine Goldsmith Dickinson Center for MS, at Mt. Sinai Hospital, 5 East 98th street, New York, N.Y. 10029 would be deeply appreciated by the family.

We are very saddened & heartbroken to report that early this morning, Jack passed away. Tara now has to pay for Jack's funeral, on top of all of the other household bills.

Tara and her girls need as much help as we can give them. They have lost the worker's comp & disability money that Jack received every month, so now it is going to be evem harder for the family to survive financially. Anything you can do to help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

Thank you to all that have donated so far. Your donations have helped out Jack and his family, but they are still behind on many of their bills, including their mortgage. We do not want Jack, Tara and the girls to lose their home, so we are still in need of more donations. Thank you!!
