Alabama, “the River State,” contains 145,109 miles of water ways.
Mobile Bay is the final destination of water from 65% of Alabama, along with portions of Mississippi, Georgia and Tennessee.
Alabama has more freshwater aquatic species than any other state. Including 38% of the fish in North America (327 species) and 52% of freshwater turtles.
Alabama is also 2nd in the nation for number of species lost to extinction.
Streams, rivers, and reservoirs supply drinking water to 56% of the population in Alabama, including cities, such as, Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Bessemer, Cullman, Oneonta, and Jasper.
The Alabama Fisheries Association estimates that Alabama's water based recreation industry brings over $1 billion per year into the state's economy. Consider the economic value of clean waters.
Inadequate state funding has allowed agricultural, municipal, and industrial pollution to negatively impact these vital water ways.
For example:
The proposed Shepherd Bend Mine on the Black Warrior River’s Mulberry Fork has landed the Black Warrior on the annual list of America’s Most Endangered Rivers™ – via a report issued by the conservation group American Rivers.
Not to fear, there are groups fighting everyday to keep the rivers and streams of Alabama flowing clean. These organizations conduct research, educate the public, and protect our watersheds from pollutants.
In May of 2016, Collin Williams, a marine science student at The University of Alabama, and Chris Cochrane, a graduate of environmental science at the University of Alabama, will kayak 340 miles down the Black Warrior and Tombigbee rivers, from Tuscaloosa to Mobile, in order to raise funds and awarness for ongoing river conservation efforts in the state of Alabama.
