Two weeks ago I visited the site of John Wurdeman's Family's burnt out home. It definitely hits you more deeply to be looking at a wreck of a house that still seems hard to fathom is gone. With all of their memories the family and their friends created here no longer attached to a physical entity.

Thanks to your support John and his family have secured a plot on the other side of Sighnaghi and hope to break ground there soon, once their architect (one of the best in Georgia) completes the designs. The new home will look onto the Caucasus mountain and as before the kitchen will be central in their home.

The burnt site is covered here with a roof to preserve as much as possible the foundations of a future building , delayed until more funds can be raised.

Thank you so much for helping this family rebuild, figuratively, from these ashes.
Note the small puppy that has slept the night on the roof.

The latest progress update from John Wurdeman, following the destruction of his family's home by fire in Georgia, as a letter. Pics attached:

Dear Friends,

Spring has come!!! Ketevan, Lazare, Gvantsa and I are all doing well. After long hard thought and analysing of the situation with our house we decided it would be very costly to rebuild, and all your generous donations, plus are small amount of resources together, would still not nearly cover the beginning of it. It was a large home purchased when real estate in Sighnaghi was affordable for an artist and musician, we also have a neighbour that owned about 20% of the house and never lived there, but won't sell out at anything close to an affordable and fair price and the house ideally would be rebuilt as one unit, structurally its next to impossible to do it otherwise, and wouldn't warrant the investment if it wasn't under one owner. If and when she comes around, we might look at rebuilding this and having a family run commercial space around food and wine.

For now we have used your precious donations, to build a temporary roof over the original house to keep snow and rain out and to protect the lower walls which are still intact, and to buy land on the edge of town and start drawing upon blueprints for a small but beautiful house with great views, room for a kitchen garden, it will be an even better place for a residence. Then we will need to keep saving and raising funds to actually finish building but you all helped us get started! The outpour of heart and support was huge, there are too many people that helped in so many ways, listing you almost seems not right I know who you are and you know. May you be rewarded for your kindness a thousand times! Love from all of us! Know we are so, so grateful !

Love

John

So much compassion and empathy has poured in from John and Ketevan's friends and family from around the world. People worldwide are helping to raise the funds needed to rebuild their home. As it was a historical building, traditional methods of building need to be employed. In the meantime, John, Ketevan, Lazare and Gvantsa are temporarily living above the restaurant. Your donations help them dream one day they can return to their home.
The clean up continues....

The next day after the fire, John, Ketevan, Lazare and Gvantsa are pulling themselves up and getting on with their lives. Friends have come from all around to help pick through the ruble of their home and help with the clean up.

The next steps include getting an architect's design and roof on the home as winter begins.
The next day, after the fire.
