Abiding Gardens is a Dudeist charity based in Greensboro, North Carolina. The goal of Abiding Gardens is to provide low-income families with the necessary means to grow their own vegetables.
After consulting with these families regarding their living space and what kind of vegetables they would like to grow, Abiding Gardens will build each family customized garden beds. Abiding Gardens recognizes that families in need of food assistance usually also do not own their own home and may have little or no outdoor space. For this reason we will work with each family to provide a growing system that is practical for their physical space. We will also provide the soil and the seeds or seedlings. We will offer each family whatever advice or assistance they require to get their vegetable garden started. Follow up advice and assistance will also be available throughout the growing season to help ensure a successful harvest. Abiding Gardens will offer recipes and information on preserving vegetables to help each family get the maximum benefit from their harvest.
Abiding Gardens acknowledges that a vegetable garden will not solve all the problems associated with food insecurity but we hope to help some families close at least a part of their nutrition gap. We also believe that the act of growing your own vegetables has benefits for families and especially children that go beyond just the vegetables produced.
