In Memory of Lynn Hathaway

My mother is the most caring, selfless, amazing person in the entire world. Any that know her personally, know what I am talking about. She always puts others before herself. Lynn is the type of person who lives to help others. She has never ever put herself first, even now when she needs to be putting herself first.

Her caring nature especially showed true when our family decided to adopt my two sisters Heather and Kayla. In addition to adoptions she also opened her home to many foster children.

Unfortunately, back in 2006 we lost my sister Heather very suddenly. This devastated our home. My mom took this the hardest. She always wants to help everyone and make them feel better but that time, she couldn’t fix the problem, she couldn’t make this better. After we lost my sister Heather it took a toll on my whole family, but that didn’t stop my mom from wanting to keep her home open to children in need. She continued to host children within the foster care system. She is always trying to help others no matter how inconvenient it may be for her.

Just as we were finally healing from the loss of a family member, in 2012 my mother was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer. She then had to have a lumpectomy, which removed the cancerous mass. After this treatment, she had to go through aggressive and intense chemotherapy sessions. In March 2013, during one of her chemotherapy sessions her doctor made an error. When she went home that night, she was having a really hard time breathing. Come to find out she had congestive heart failure caused by the chemotherapy. My dad rushed her to the hospital and our family met them there. We almost lost our mother.

After getting out of the hospital, she had to continue her cancer treatments. They opted her out of any more chemotherapy but she did have to continue with radiation therapy. Since then, she has been in and out of the hospital with issues caused by fluid pooling around her lungs and heart. It has made her everyday life more and more difficult.

Although in remission from breast cancer, the chemotherapy caused her to have a condition known as cardiomyopathy along with congestive heart failure. This has caused frequent trips to the hospital for fluid building around her lungs and heart.

As of October 2017, my mother’s health has been slowly declining. This has caused her to be in and out of the hospital at least a couple times of month. This last stay that the hospital has been the most serious trip yet. Her heart has become so weak that is it only operating at 10%. This means that everything, even simple trips to the bathroom are extremely difficult because her heart just can’t keep up. Not only is her heart operating at only 10% but because of the inefficiencies, fluid just doesn’t seem to want to leave her heart, which means she is constantly fighting the battle of getting fluid out.

Lynn is currently at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston Massachusetts. She will be there until something changes and she can go ahead with open-heart surgery to receive a heart pump. Right now, the doctors are trying to get her stable enough to see if she would be a good candidate for a heart transplant or heart pump. Hopefully once they assess her, she will be deemed a good candidate to be put on a waiting list for a heart transplant. At this point a new heart is the only thing that will make things better. Once she is stable, she can get open heart surgery to get a heart pump put in to potentially help her heart until she gets a transplant. This surgery unfortunately, is the only option to save Lynn’s life. It very dangerous and very expensive. Getting a heart pump is Lynn’s only option and we are very worried. It would mean the world to our whole family if you could please help during this time.
