Lucky Penny Fund

If you know us, you know we have a lot of love for each other. So much in fact, that it often spills out to those around us. At the top of our love list are little heartbeats wrapped in fur.

Our girl, Penny came into our lives about a year ago. She is a black and tan dachshund. A friend reached out to us with the classic, "Hey, I know your family loves weiner dogs. We have a very scared, very special girl in the shelther.  She is not doing well. Will you foster her?" This "good deed" quickly turned into a love match. In less than 48 hours Penny worked her way into our hearts and into our 4-legged pack, made up of Lilly (13 year old doxie), Dax (5 year old doxie), and Lola (2 year old, mean-as-hell, black cat.) Yup, we are THOSE people.

Penny had a rough life before us. When we met Penny she weighed about 5 lbs. It was clear that she had many, many liters and her little body had taken a beating. Her most noticable feature was a scar that ran the length of her back. For those who haven't seen it, the scar comes from a really severe burn. We found out from our vet that often puppy mill dogs are given the wrong dose of flea and tick medicine and then thrown back in their cages. The medicine on Penny's back caused a burn so deep and so severe that she not only lost her fur, but the pigment in her black skin.

In additon to the burn scar, Penny also has a mangled ear. We assumed that she had been in a dog fight, possibly over some food. Our vet shared that often puppy mill dogs are marked in some physical way, in this case, docking her ear, to distinguish her from the other females.

Penny arrived at our house scared, unsure, unable to bark, and starved for love. She would sit in her bed, not moving.  With all that had happened in her little life, we would have never blamed her for feeling cranky or even aggressive, but just the opposite was true. From the first minute we met her, she jumped in our laps and shoved her tiny head under out necks, eager for kisses and snuggles.

Today, Penny weighs in at 8 pounds and is up at 5:30AM on the dot with a sharp bark to receive her perscription food. She bounds out the door with her brother and sister to chase squirrels, patrol the perimeter of the yard, or sun bathe on the patio. Her favorite activity is following around her soulmate, Lilly. Lilly has always been a one woman show. She loved (tolerated) Dax who always believed the sun rose and set on her head, but she never, ever let him share her bones, bowl, or bed. Enter the lucky Penny Laine.

Just like Penny won us over, she has changed Lilly. We often wake to find Penny squeezed into Lilly's bed, laying on top of her without a single complaint from Lilly. Penny follows Lils around the yard, in wide-eyed wonder of her amazing sister. If you see Lilly, Penny is two steps behind her. It's as if Lilly senses the fact that Penny needs a little bit more patience and love and obliges.
The heartbreaking truth is that there are too many animals that won't ever get as lucky as our Penny, but deserve the chance. We would like to try and do something so that more animals, specificially puppy mill dogs, might find a chance to find their forever home.

Our amazing vet is Brad Twigg. Brad is part owner of Grandview Animal Hospital. The clinic developed a sister, non-profit organzation named, "Hard Luck Hounds," to help rescue and foster pets, specifically puppy mill dogs. There are many great pet organizations in KC, but this one touched our hearts with its focus on puppy mill dogs. It gets much less attention than the big players and often takes in the toughest cases.

In lieu of presents, we are asking people to make a donation in any amount that feels comfortable to them, to Hard Luck Hounds. Help us demonstrate that a little luck can go a long way.

With love,

Hailee, Tiff, Lilly, Dax, Lola, and Penny
