While playing with a friend's newly adopted dog, 15 month old Lucas was suddenly attacked, with the dog biting off a large portion of Lucas' face.  He was airlifted to the University of Iowa Childrens' Hospital where he had a 6 hour surgery involving at least 3 surgeons.  A large part of his gum/bone including permanent teeth were ripped out, most of his nose cartilidge was destroyed, and he will have lifelong damage.  He will not have any upper front teeth, will need dental reconstruction to hopefully support false teeth when he is an adult, and have more facial surgies in the future.

Lucas will stay sedated for many days and remain in the hospital for weeks to come. Holly and Tyler remain at his side while their other two boys stay with family. They are from Clinton, Iowa and will need all the help they can get with paying for medical bills, transportation costs, food, and everything else that comes up in emergency situations like this one.
The extent of damage is beyond belief, and the pain associated with it all is unimaginable! Pray, pray, pray! He has a long road of recovery and many surgeries ahead.

Good morning!!! Well what a night Lucas had. He was still pretty thrashy and was having a hard time staying asleep. He also had to have lasiks
because of edema (swelling). Edema is very common with patients who can't get up and go. The lasiks did work great and he did have a couple big poopageddons. Respiratory ended up coming in to give him a breathing treatment because he was getting wheezy. Welll then because of the breathing treatment his heart rate skyrocketed into the 200s and then his blood pressure bottomed out because of all the fluids that the lasiks have been pulling from his body he began to get dehydrated. But after they started him on fluids and got him some more sedation he actually rested for several hours. The nurses did end up scooting him up in bed to left gravity help drain the fluids from his lungs. We're taking it hour by hour. And we thank you for all you prayers, donations, thoughts everything!!! Thank you alllll so much for this amazing showing of support!!! Love you all!!!

Lucas update (From Holly-his mommy)
so Lucas is doing okay. We have had a hard time sedating him and keeping him sedated. I think he just wants to get up and run around but we can't have that just yet. So we have changed meds and increased meds and it has helped with him being a little more comfy and not thrashing around. We don't want him to thrash because he has a difficult airway so if his breathing tube comes out we are in trouble. He had to have many stitches and by many I mean hundreds in his face so getting a tube back in could be almost impossible. Also he is very swollen from his meds and from just laying around. Lucas goes in Tuesday for another surgery to remove some stitches and again on Monday to remove more stitches. He will have a feeding tube for a while since he has no more front teeth on the top and also because they need his mouth to heal really well before he can began eating. He will also be needing physical therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy once he wakes and probably there after. He's going to have to relearn to walk because his body will be weak from laying in his bed for so long. Other than that that's all we have. We just ask for prayers for him!!
