Loyola ENT Mission Trip 2016

In February, 2016, our team of ENT (ear, nose and throat) staff and students from Loyola University Medical Center will once again embark on our annual week-long mission trip of helping those in need of medical treatment in Santiago, Dominican Republic. This will be the 6th consecutive year our team has made the trip.
Our team will work in a surgical center at the Institute for Latin American Concern (ILAC), a Jesuit teaching and healthcare center in Santiago. The ILAC center serves 120 villages around Santiago, which includes about 150,000 rural individuals who do not have access to affordable healthcare.
Last year, our team was able to treat 310 patients in clinic, performed 67 audiograms and handed out 45 hearing aids. We also performed 104 surgeries. These surgeries included: tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, removal of goiters, excision of lumps and bumps in the head and neck, and many more.
What our team did in one week would take two years for these people to get treatment at the county hospital.
Now is where you come into play. We need your help! This trip is completely self-funded by those volunteering. Expenses include travel, housing, and also a week of their vacation time. ILAC does not have very much ENT diagnostic or surgical equipment, so we have to bring most of what we need in order to help the community. Not only that, we even have to buy the diesel fuel to run the generator, which powers the surgical center during our visit.
Any contribution, great or small, will go a long way in regards to providing healthcare for those in need.
