Whitehorse is a small northern community that badly needs a thrift store!
Recently, two free stores and a Salvation Army store have closed, leaving residents of Whitehorse and most of the isolated communities it serves without a place to donate or purchase quality affordable goods such as clothing and housewares.
Not being able to recycle these goods means that they either end up in the landfill or are transported thousands of kilometers down the Alaska highway for other uses. Not the way to go when we are trying to conserve and steward the planet’s resources!
With these concerns in mind, a group of committed individuals have formed the Whitehorse Community Thrift Store Society, supported by several non-profit organizations.
What we have: a society, committed volunteers, lots of stuff, and tremendous community support! We have organized several pop-up thrift shops to begin to meet the need and to get ourselves going, and they have been very well received! Check us out on Facebook: Love 2 Thrift Yukon
What we need: funds for a permanent location and a manager.
We believe that $70,000 would enable us to move this project to the next level, with a permanent location and a point person to coordinate donations, sorting and pricing donations and supporting our committed volunteers. We anticipate rent of $5,000 - $6000/month for the amount of space we realistically need so this amount would get us through most of a year, until we start making a profit!
Our Feasibility Study indicates that we will generate adequate income to support ourselves once we get rolling…it’s the getting rolling part we need your help with!
Supporting this project will ensure that Yukoners have a place to take the stuff they no longer need but that someone else will appreciate and use. It will ensure that less clothing and other consumables go into the landfill. And, eventually, we hope that the profits can be put back into the community through the non-profit organizations that have supported it. It’s a win all around!
