When I was a young singer in Canada I was part of the Nova Scotia Youth Choir (NSYC). It was a vital part of my musical training and through that choir I made many amazing friendships that have lasted a lifetime. Now I am a professional singer based in The Netherlands and I have started this campaign to support the Nova Scotia Youth Choir Louise Simons Scholarship . This is for four reasons:
1) To give back to the NSYC and its founding organisation, the Nova Scotia Choral Federation
2) To help young singers who are in financial need
3) To show off the talented people of Nova Scotia
4) To highlight the life of an extraordinary woman, Louise Simons
Louise Simons was from Kingston, Nova Scotia and was instrumental in the formation of the NSYC. She was one of those inspiring people who did what she did just for the love of it. She was happy, enthusiastic, kind, and she was adored. While the Nova Scotia choral community was devastated by her passing in 2006, we can honour her memory by supporting young singers through the Louise Simons Scholarship. This scholarship supports four young singers ages 16 - 25 to attend the NSYC.
With your $20 donation through gofundme, in December 2016 you will receive a CD* with a single song, 'Wexford Carol' arranged by Canadian composer Jeff Enns , with myself, soprano Nicole Jordan, the Halifax Camerata Singers, and Halifax cellist Shimon Walt. CD cover design is by Annapolis Valley-raised artist Kurt van der Basch, and production by Halifax-based company, Leaf Music.
While many have donated their time and talent to this cause, there are still production and administrative costs, so please note: Half of your donation will go to production, and the other half will go to the Louis Simons scholarship until we reach to our goal of $6500. If we surpass this goal then your full donation will go to the scholarship. After this fundraising drive is over, all proceeds from the sale of the CD single will go towards the scholarship FOREVER!
2016 is an auspicious year: It is the 40th anniversary of the Nova Scotia Choral Federation, the 30th anniversary of the Halifax Camerata Singers, the 40th anniversary of Shimon Walt's arrival in Nova Scotia, and the 40th anniversary of Nicole Jordan's arrival on Earth! Most importantly, it is the 10th anniversary of Louise Simon's passing.
What better time to celebrate this amazing woman and to help young singers keep singing?
