López Ellis Family and Levittown PR

$3,123 of $2,500 goal

Raised by 43 people in 14 months
Created September 29, 2017
Northwestern's Department of Spanish and Portuguese has strong links to our brothers and sisters in Puerto Rico.  In particular, our graduate student Verónica is in Puerto Rico right now with her family. The department has decided to start fundraising to help her immediate family, her mother and relatives, whose homes have been completely destroyed after Hurricane Maria. Her mom lives in the Levittown neighborhood of San Juan, which has been particularly hard hit.

Donations will go directly to the López Ellis Family as they try to rebuild their lives in the wake of this disaster.

Hello Everybody,

We have a 2nd update today as well. Veronica has broken down where your donations have gone (traducción en español al final):

From the $3123* that were raised for Levittown families,

$1000 went to the Pérez family. Maria and her mother, Carmen, lost everything in their home due to the flooding. The physical structure of the house was severely affected as well. Maria also lost her job due to the aftermaths of the hurricane and Carmen was hospitalized a few weeks later. The funds helped them get mattresses to sleep in, medicine for Carmen, and to start repairs in the home. FEMA has yet not responded to their aid request.

$500 were given to the Torres López family whose house was completely damaged due to the hurricane winds. The funds were used to help clean out and begin repairs at the house.

$500 were given to the López Rodríguez family also victims of the flooding. They lost their house and vehicles, and used the funds to gather basic supplies and food.

$500 were given to the Cortes López family also severely affected by the hurricane winds and the subsequent flooding. Erick and Nireida’s two children were sick after the flooding because of exposure to the sewer water that completely inundated their house. The funds helped them get mattresses and medicine for the children. FEMA has denied them aid despite the fact that their home structure, including walls and electrical system, was damaged.

$103.74 went to the López Ellis family (Verónica Dávila’s immediate family) and were used to buy food, gasoline, water, and ice during the first month and a half when them and the Pérez family were sheltered at the Ellis Pérez household.

*GoFundMe retains a percentage of the funds. The total amount disbursed was of $2603.74

Hello Everyone,

Veronica has returned from Puerto Rico for the Winter Quarter, and she wants to share a letter of thanks from her family:

15 de enero de 2018

Northwesten University
Departamento de Español y Portugués
Chicago, Illinois

Eternamente agradecidos,

Familia López Ellis

Hello Everyone,

Thank you for the quick and overwhelming response: In one day, we have reached the halfway point of our goal!

We've received a number of questions, and we'd like to take a moment to answer them:

Who is receiving the money?
Veronica Davila is listed as the sole beneficiary of the funds. This means she is the only one who has access to the funds, and she will be distributing the funds in Puerto Rico.

When will the money be dispersed?
Veronica contacted us yesterday to thank us for the support. She has been able to activate her GoFundMe account and can start using the funds that have already been pledged.

Thank you again for your support, and please continue to share this campaign with friends and family.

Sincerely,
The Northwestern Department of Spanish & Portuguese
