Loki's Life Threatening Surgery!

Donation protected

This past Thursday, late morning was just like every other day earlier in the week, chaos!! You see our 11 month old Pyre Bella is on her first heat cycle and it's been challenging to say the least to keep her and 3yr old Loki apart while maintaining sanity. Have you ever heard a big tough masculine dog cry, whine, moan and yelp as if someone put his privates in a vise.... 4 days and nights Non-Stop? Believe me, Bella wasnt much better. But suddenly something just wasn't right with Loki. He started heaving but no vomit, drooling profusely , and had a very confused demeanor as if he didn't know what exactly was happening to him. These were signs of bloat/gdv ( Gastric-Dilatation-Volvulus) which we quickly confirmed by feeling and listening to his belly after a quick google search. In case your not familiar with Gdv, it is the #2 premature killer of dogs right behind cancer! Please research and educate yourself about gdv and the symptoms caused by it as your 4legged friend only has a couple hours to live and it all depends on how quickly you get them in for an xray and emergency surgery. Basically his stomach flipped over almost 180% all due to something as silly as drinking water too quickly...r u kidding me? Nope were being serious! At this point the gas continues to build up pressure with no way out which cuts off blood circulation to major organs and leads to shock, organ failure and death all within a couple hours.
After reading the words" imminent death" and "only a couple hours" is when our panic really kicked in. We rushed to the nearest vet, cant help! The second closest, "we dont do surgeries" but only after they took the xrays, gave him a bunch of meds, an IV and smacked us with a bill of over $400 which had to be paid on the spot for literaly 20min of there time. The reason they gave us for the rediculous bill was because "emergency circumstances." We both turned and looked at eachother with tears running down our cheeks. This left us with less than $100bucks to our name and now Loki's looks like he could slip away any minute. The vet recommended another location that could perform the surgery but it was an hour away. We grab the info, started driving and gave them call to fill them in on the situation. My heart dropped to the floor when I heard that it would cost between 4500 - $5,000 and started balling when they told me that they would not take payments. After a few phone calls to other animal hospitals, we were blessed to reach one that would perform the surgery however would require 600 down payment and the location happened to be closer to our town which was a miracle because we had to backtrack 10minutes to borrow the rest of the down payment...
Surgery was a success with no major organ damage!! We were told Loki had to stay overnight but to expect an immediate recovery. We should have know better than to think we were out of the woods. Friday he doesnt eat, Saturday still nothing, Sunday still no good. So we all agreed to bring him home to see if things change, maybe hes homesick. Vet confirmed that most cases the appetite comes back immediately but Loki may be nausus from the meds, shock, etc. How much longer do we need to hold out before we can come to the conclusion theres something still wrong? Were praying he doesn't need to be opened up again because we're getting the feeling the vet isn't really anxious to perform another surgery since we already have a huge balance remaining on our bill. So this brings us here. We're at the Lords Mercy as well as yours. Any help is very much appreciated.

Many people have had the pleasure to meet Loki and for those of you who havent, his picture is in the dictionary under "Gentle Giant". Keep your eyes and ears open as you may see for yourself or hear someone shouting " is that a polar bear sticking out of the sunroof?" Being a Great Pyrenees means being a great protector as they are bred for livestock guardians, but please dont tell any of the bears or coyotes out there that he's all talk, would never harm a fly, and hes more of a sofa cushion guardian!
If you find it in your heart to make a donation, we would greatly appreciate it. And if a donanation is not possible, please keep Loki in your prayers this week.
I can't thank you enough for all of your love, support, and prayers at this time.
