LIZZIE SHEA: SEASON 1
Project Description
Lizzie Shea is a dramatic web-series set and filmed in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The series centers on the title character, a 22-year-old woman who returns to her hometown for the first time in several years. The eight-episode first season introduces viewers to Lizzie, a self-taught artist who has been on the move since she was a teen; viewers will also get to know the city of Fort Wayne as Lizzie explores her home for the first time as an adult. The series will feature actors, performers, artists, and musicians from the greater Fort Wayne community. Shooting will begin in January 2017, with episodes (approximately 15 minutes in length) premiering online on March 29th.
We have three main goals for this series:
1) To realistically portray Lizzie, the series' young female protagonist
Historically, female characters in cinema and television are often written as caricatures or fragments of the women they can/should be, especially when these characters are written by men. And, not surprisingly, the statistics (check out http://womenintvfilm.sdsu.edu/research/) regarding the amount and quality of female roles on screen are discouraging. That simply makes it all the more important for us to craft strong, realistic female leading and supporting characters in movies and tv shows. Our creative team, led by writer/director Jack Cantey, lead actor Morgan Spencer, and a trio of executive producers (two of whom are women), aims to create in Lizzie a character who is authentic, believable, full, and complex. We are also dedicated to featuring a number of supporting female characters who don't just stand around and talk about their boyfriends and kids.
2) To realistically portray the city of Fort Wayne, the primary setting for the series
Small Midwestern cities like Fort Wayne are also usually represented on screen in unrealistic, distorted ways. These cities and towns are frequently portrayed as hopelessly backwards or unbearably quaint or openly mocked for a whole host of ridiculous reasons. We are seeking to show Fort Wayne in an honest, realistic fashion. There is a great deal to celebrate about our city, though we are not making a sanitized tourist video. Our goal is to show the complexity, contradictions, and dynamism that make Fort Wayne a fascinating American city.
3) To collaborate with the growing population of artistic and entrepreneurial talent in the greater Fort Wayne community
Fort Wayne is home to a vibrant population of artistic and entrepreneurial talent, and it is our goal to work with as many actors, performers, artists, musicians, and business owners as possible during the course of this series. As Lizzie discovers and explores Fort Wayne for the first time as an adult, viewers of the series will see the city's people, locations, and cultural diversity through her eyes.
