Living Rivers (Ríos Vivos) Colombia

Donation protected
Currently under construction, the Hidroituango dam is directly affecting 19 municipalities of the Cauca river, the second longest river in Colombia.

In May of this year, a state of emergency was declared. The dam wall was in danger of collapsing and releasing over 2,700 million cubic meters of water. As a result, 26,000 people were evacuated into temporary shelters and the lives of 300.000 local inhabitants of the Cauca river basin under the influence of dam were at risk. Today, the roads are damaged, several communities remain isolated, and evacuees continue to be in ‘temporary shelters’,  facing uncertainty and health concerns, needing food and requiring basic hygiene supplies.

The emergency is not over!

Official reports  have revealed rampant violations of the environmental law, lack of adequate technical standards, and lack of a contingency plan by the Hidroituango project.

Living Rivers Antioquia or "Ríos Vivos Antioquia" is a coalition of grassroots organizations formed by affected communities who are resisting this mega-project by demanding respect for their rights and advocating for the safe return to their land.

Funds collected through this campaign will be used to provide food and medicines for displaced communities and expenses for much needed Living Rivers (Ríos Vivos) Antioquia advocacy work. They will be directly administered by AMARUD (Asociación de Mujeres Defensoras del Agua y la Vida), a feminist non-profit organization that is part of Ríos Vivos Antioquia (NIT 901207104-5).

This campaign is organized by Care for Colombian Leaders- CCL, a network of academics and allies in Colombia and Canada, working in solidarity with social leaders in Colombia. Care for Colombian Leaders is particularly concerned with the increasing number of social leaders and human rights defenders being killed in Colombia. The lives of Living River (Ríos Vivos) social leaders are also under threat.
