"Live With A Purpose"
Erin Hook was born and raised in St. Joseph, MO. A few months before graduation from the University of Central Missouri with her Bachelors in Education, Erin was the passenger in a fatal car accident. Days before her life was suddenly cut short, Erin posted a message on social media: "Live With A Purpose." Erin's passion for life was contagious to anyone who knew her. She was a true servant to her faith and to the community. In 2011, Erin organized a mission trip to help with the tornado disaster relief in Joplin. She also volunteered as a missionary in Oaxaca, Mexico in 2013. Erin's smile and energy were infectious! She was a good friend who cared about others. Her excitement for life and her optimistic attitude touched the lives of others, encouraging them to be positive in all things. Erin had an enthusiasm for learning, a spunky sense of humor, and an outgoing personality. She had a joy for life, and most of all, a laugh that you would never forget. Erin's love was children. Her passion was teaching and her dream was to be an amazing teacher one day. Her goal was to live a Christ-centered life and share the love of Jesus with others. We know Erin was able to accomplish all of these things in her short, beautiful life on this earth.
A group of St. Joseph community members has come together to design and create a Purpose Garden as a tribute to Erin's love of family, friends and children. The Purpose Garden will be located on the St. Joseph Community Campus and will include:
* LIttle Free Library - a type of enclosure that is full of books where anyone may stop by and pick up a book (or two) and bring back another book to share. The Mission of the Little Free Library is to promote literacy and the love of reading, and to build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity and wisdom across generations. According to the U.S. Department of Education, 14% of the U.S. adult population cannot read. Over 85% of all kids who deal with the juvenile court system are functionally illiterate. Little Free Libraries are helping to change these statistics by providing free access to books 24/7 in under-served neighborhoods.
