Little Merida was Hit by a Car

$12,402 of $50,000 goal

Raised by 220 people in 2 months
What happened?
On Thanksgiving Day, two-year-old Merida was playing at the edge of the driveway when she was struck and run over by the car of another Thanksgiving guest. In the ambulance on the way to the nearest hopsital, they lost her vital signs several times, and so she was airlifted to Oklahoma University Medical Center as soon as possible.

Merida is currently there in the PICU, and the extent of her injuries are still unknown. We know she has fractures across her face and skull, as well as damage to her lungs and spleen, and potentally a fractured vertebrae. She's been intubated and sedated as we wait for her vital signs to be stable enough to perform an MRI. [Update: MRI was performed Monday evening.]

How You Can Help
Make a donation. First and foremost, Merida needs her daddy with her. He's currently in southern Mexico, where he's a resident and citizen, and has been unable to find a way to reach any official who can help due to the holiday season.  Initial donations will go towards travel and potentially legal expenses related to allowing him to be with his family during this difficult time. Any further donations will go torwards any other immediate needs of the family, and medical expenses.

Spread the word. Share this campaign via email, by word of mouth, or on your social media tagged with #MeridaNeedsHerPapa! If you know anyone who can help Merida's father enter the country, please ask them to contact us.

All donations will go directly to the family. Thank you in advance for supporting Merida and her family through this.
Amanda Maturkanich (family friend)

Before the update, I want to send out another thank you to those who've been donating and sharing Merida's story! The donations have been funneled through me and then to Amber via check or money transfer so that she can still access them once she and the kids are able to return to their home in Mexico. Amber has been like family to me since she was born, so being able to help her in this way has been a blessing to me. So far the funds have been able to cover the co-pays for Merida's follow up appointments, as well as many of the day-to-day expenses that tend to come up, which I'm sure has helped very much in easing the stress of this whole situation.

Merida has several more follow-up appointments through January 16, so Amber and the girls will have to stay in Oklahoma for now, separated from her husband, who has not been granted entry to the states at this time. I want to personally say that I've been more than impressed by the grace and compassion that both Amber and Miguel have shown throughout this whole trauma, despite not being able to be together.

But now for the best news: Merida was able to take off her neck brace and leg cast today! She still has multiple fractures and has to take it easy, but it's wonderful to know she has more wiggle room to be a toddler. The plastic surgeon also said her scars are healing nicely, and I'd like to welcome her into the Awesome Forehead Scar Club, where Harry Potter and I are founding members.

Future donations will primarily go towards medical bills, which have started to come in. However, the girls not only have a Christmas to celebrate, but Merida's third birthday is on Christmas Eve! If you'd like to make the season a little brighter for the girls, feel free to leave a comment with your donation stating that you'd like to get the girls a present, and Merida's aunts will be sure that gets done. Alternatively, the girls also have a Christmas list here:

Thank you again for all of your support, and have a Happy Holiday!

Ten days ago family, friends, and even strangers solemnly waited to hear if Merida had made it through her helicopter flight to OU Children's Hospital. Between the visible marks from the accident and the time she spent without a heartbeat, it would be several more days of waiting to find out if she would still be herself at all once she finally woke up.

Today we can say with great relief that Merida not only remains the feisty toddler we knew before the accident, but also that she is out of the hospital! She was released just a couple of hours ago to head back to Stillwater with her mom and sister, where she'll stay for the foreseeable future while she continues to recover under the watchful eye of her doctors.

So many people have been giving of themselves in order to make this stressful time a little less stressful for the family, and we're incredibly grateful. Efforts to reunite Merida's papa with his wife and daughters is still ongoing, and there will be many weeks or months of recovery for Merida, so every social media share is still very appreciated.

Today Merida was able to say "Mama" and "Papa," and spend a little more time with her big sister. While assessing her for nerve damage, she responds when she wants to and ignores everyone when she doesn't, in typical toddler fashion. She had a second MRI today to look more at injury to her neck, which we'll get the results of tomorrow.

Thank you to everyone who has been generous and kind enough to want to brighten Merida's day! Waking up from an MRI to colorful blankets and pillows was a nice morale boost for her.

Today the doctors took Merida off the breathing tube and sedation! She's not able to talk, but has been able to enjoy a bit of cartoons. The attending doctor requested a specialist to look at the MRI results, but so far there is no apparent brain or nerve damage, so everyone is very hopeful that her recovery, while long, will be complete save for a wild scar. Her condition is still considered critical, but is moving in a positive direction.
She likes looking at Mama.
They gave her something to chew on.
