Lisa's Transplant Fund
Donation protected
I write this today to ask for help on behalf of my girlfriend, Lisa Howenstine. Lisa is extremely giving and compassionate, but now she could really use help from others even if she won’t ask for it herself. This is why I am writing you today. She is in liver failure, caused by an autoimmune disease she was born with. Today, Lisa sits and waits on the transplant list going on 3 years. This is a very expensive and emotional process. I watch as she gets more sick, has more doctor appointments and visits to the hospital, and has medical bills piling up too fast to keep up with. Twice she was called in for transplant, and twice the livers ended up not being of transplant quality. Doctors have told us she is dying, but there is nothing that can be done without an organ. Bill collectors call multiple times a day, and send threatening letters so often that we have boxes full of them.
Lisa is not the typical liver transplant patient, she is just 32 and not on the list for anything she has done to herself. She literally slept through her late twenties, and is currently only able to work just a few hours a week but she still does everything she can to make ends meet. Before becoming this sick, her life was full of promise but now it’s largely spent in bed. Lisa graduated in the top 1% of her college (University of Massachusetts, Amherst) and was a regular on the law school Dean’s List at South Texas College of Law. She was awarded the Dean’s Citizenship award given to just one student a year. She was chosen for “significant contributions to the benefit the college and community of law students.” She also led the Animal Law Society to Legal Society of the Year two years in a row. Her love for animals, friends, and family have always shined through.
Even if you can give just a few dollars, your help will be greatly appreciated and will go towards insurance premiums, doctor copays, and medications. Some of Lisa’s procedures have very expensive deductibles and have to be repeated many times per year. Some of these are paracentesis, endoscopies for banding vericies in her throat, MRIs, bone scans, heart evaluations for surgery, and the list goes on. Thank you so much for considering Lisa, if you can pass this along to your friends I know we can make even a small difference in her outlook on life.
