Lionel R. Holmes Memorial DNA Fund
Lionel Rocha Holmes (1919-2017) was an important part of the Sacramento, CA Portuguese community.
He was one of the original founders of the Portuguese Historical & Cultural Society (PHCS), a former PHCS president, former Cabrillo Club president, author of Portuguese Pioneers of the Sacramento Area, the editor of "O Progresso" which is the quarterly newsletter of the PHCS, and a recipient of the Gold Medal of Merit awarded by the Portuguese government for his active role and contributions to the Portuguese community.
In the last few years of his life, he greatly contributed to the efforts of using DNA testing of people from the Azores in order to discover more of our heritage. He was probably responsible for well over 100 people to get Y-DNA testing to discover more about their ancient origins.
In his honor I have established the "Lionel Rocha Holmes Memorial DNA Fund" to raise money to continue testing people of Azorean origins. I would like to give away a free DNA test to people who represent untested family lines that will further our efforts to learn all we can through DNA about our Azores and Portuguese roots.
It will be an on-going fund that will allow people to get tested each year, with at least two people each quarter. Details of the recipients each quarter will appear in "O Progresso" and in the Azores Genealogy groups on Facebook.
As we head into 2019 I hope we can see a significant amount of donations for continued testing.
Donations will be greatly appreciated.
The Pico kits have been delivered to Pico, thanks to the great help of Antonio Manuel Rosa. Muito obrigado!
I am leaving the other 10 kits unpaid for now because I want to leave an option for Family Finder for some females and so far there are no really great FF coupons. This week there doesn't seem to be any and last week they were $5 off. I am looking for $10 coupons in the coming weeks. This is the best I saw last year and I think they will do that again.
I want to thank once again the MANY donors through Go Fund Me and directly to me for making this all possible. From cousins to friends and people I never even heard from before, it has been a great and successful effort.
We still need money for the Santa Maria kits. Just today I paid (again) to have them sent to Carl LaPietra in the USA and so they will probably arrive next week. And though they won't be used for another couple months, it would be a huge opportunity missed if we don't pay for them during this Christmas sale. So for those personally going to benefit from having more DNA testing of people from Santa Maria Island, please don't forget this chance. And for anyone else who simply supports additional testing, it will be very welcome.
Also, to upgrade these Y12 kits to the Y37 level, the cost is only $49 each. If there is any spare money from donations, I would like to use it for many upgrades like this.
I would be shocked to get so much, but if there is an abundance of donations, I would actually like to upgrade some to Big Y from previous testing. But the cost for that will be in the range of $400 each. If people know a Big Y test will be helpful to their own information and want to sponsor a specific person, I will be happy to do that.
