Limerick Against Pollution

Donation protected
Limerick Against Pollution was set up by a group of concerned local residents in a bid to stop Irish Cement from trying to get planning to incinerate tyres, plastics and other hazardous waste at their plant on the outskirts of Limerick City.

We are very disappointed with the shock announcement on 13th April by An Bord Pleanala to endorse the decision by Limerick City & County Council to allow Irish Cement burn an extensive list of industrial wastes as so called alternative fuels / raw materials at their plant in Mungret, Co. Limerick.

We were especially disappointed to learn of the decision from local radio rather than directly from An Bord Pleanala. Daily calls to An Bord Pleanala as recently as yesterday gave no indication that the decision was imminent.

While we are somewhat gratified that Irish Cement have been denied permission to burn 16 out of 114 categories of hazardous industrial wastes we feel that the dioxin and arsenic risks of burning tyres, plastics, solvents, animal waste tissue and red mud from Foynes has not been adequately addressed. At the oral hearing the Council's head of planning couldn't even confirm that they'd read the list of hazardous wastes let alone assessed the risk.

We strongly disagree with the Bord's opinion that there is no risk to public or residential amenity considering that planning has been granted for at least 700+ new homes under the plume of the factory and 6 schools are now operating within sight of the plant.

The EPA has a responsibility to ensure recycling is maximised and that Ireland moves towards a circular economy. We can no longer export our waste problems to China. But instead of developing a strategy for dealing with excess plastics, packaging and municipal waste we are choosing to sacrifice our air quality and our children's health.

During the hearing it became clear that planners hadn't read CRH's submissions on toxic waste nor had they provided details to the HSE. Its likely that Facebook has better data than the HSE about public health risk in Limerick - a national blackspot for pulmonary disease.

We really need your help now more than ever to help us with the costs involved to oppose their plans by either taking it to the next stage of a possible judicial review or engaging experts in environmental  planning and law to challenge the granting of an emmisions licence by the EPA. We are reviewing all of the options open to us right now.

Please spread the word by sharing this event on your page and inviting your friends to do the same.

The funds raised will be used in the continuing campaign to protect the quality of the air of Limerick and the Mid West Region.
