Help me save my son’s life

Billy is my loving and beautiful only child. He is incredibly compassionate as well as talented and has everything to live for, and so much to give.

But when he was just finishing his A-levels Billy was told he had aggressive cancer.

In the three years since, through gruelling chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery which severely impacted his mobility Billy has battled Ewing’s Sarcoma, a bone cancer which mainly affects young people. There were occasions when we thought he had beaten it but we have now been given the devastating news that it’s returned.

There is an opportunity to save his life though. We have been fortunate enough to have been introduced to a specialist molecular oncologist based in America. His approach is at the cutting edge of cancer treatment and involves using the patient’s own immune system to develop a vaccine to fight the cancer causing genes.
The process happens in several stages beginning with a sample of Billy’s tumor being removed by a biopsy. It then takes several months to screen the sample to identify it’s specific genetic code which then forms the basis for the development of the vaccine immunotherapy treatment which is given every three weeks.
Billy has active disease right now in his lungs and traces of disease in his shoulder and lower back. As a result he is having some standard chemotherapy treatment at home which we hope at best will control things until the targeted therapy can be given.
In the long term however, this standard chemotherapy available here is palliative and will not result in a cure.
As any mother can imagine, I am desperate for my beautiful boy to have the chance to access a new treatment that can potentially save his life.
There have been a number of cases in the press recently about the positive outcomes of this targeted approach to treating cancer and it is very much a genuine and scientifically based approach gaining momentum in the mainstream. A type of this treatment has recently been approved to treat young people with Leukemia in the Uk.
Unfortunately, this has not been extended to Billy’s type of cancer at this time and this is why we are raising the money so Billy can access the treatment elsewhere.

We have already spoken with the consultant in America who believes Billy is an excellent candidate for the treatment.

As this process and treatment regime can run to around 2 years we are initially aiming to raise £200,000. This is for the medical costs and provision of the treatment. We will also be required to travel every 3 weeks to Germany for Billy to receive the immunotherapy vaccine.

We desperately need your help in raising these funds urgently so that Billy stands a chance and can have a future.

Time is increasingly against us so I am urgently appealing to you to help me save my child’s life. Billy needs to be receiving this treatment as soon as possible and every day that passes is another one against us.  The anxiety I feel as a mum about getting the funds quickly enough to save Billy’s life is consuming every second of the day.

Please donate whatever you can and share Billy’s story with as many people as possible. If you can’t donate, please just share everywhere you can. You will have helped just by doing this.

All I want is to carry on being Billy’s mum. I cannot bear to think of what will happen if we don’t raise the funds.

Billy has everything to live for. Ever since he was little he was a lovely, kind soul.

He has gone on to help raise awareness around mental health issues for other young people going through cancer, including this interview with Channel 4 news and through some published articles he has written. He recently went on Radio Norfolk with me to talk about his ordeal and this campaign.

He has a huge love of music and art which has motivated him to focus on his future. This year Billy even graduated from the Access Creative College artist development programme, despite his relentless ordeal and having to do most  of his work remotely, usually from his bed, due to his cancer treatment.

During long periods of treatment and being isolated from friends, Billy focused upon writing, producing and recording his own songs from his bedroom in Norwich and has been catching the eye of several prominent artists in the field. He is an incredibly talented song writer with a beautiful voice and has the potential to be a successful musician.

To say that Billy has been through a traumatic time is an understatement. When most young people are making plans for their futures, becoming independent and having fun, Billy has spent most of the last three years undergoing harrowing hospital treatment or at home sick with the side effects.

This nightmare disease has run rampage over every aspect our lives. Yet in the face of all this, Billy has managed to remain as positive as possible and, as his mum, I have encouraged him to focus on his future and to never give up.

Billy is an incredibly strong young man and despite battling this disease for three years he shows the strength of an ox. He has immense mental resilience that even I didn’t know he had. He seems to bounce back after each round of treatment and there have been times when we thought Billy had beaten his cancer for good, only for it to return.

I am making an urgent and heartfelt plea for as many of you as possible to please help my son access this treatment and let him live.

As a mum who is both frightened yet absolutely determined to save my son's life, I ask please please help me to get this treatment for Billy.

Anything that can help us reach this target will be so greatly appreciated and everything raised will be directly for the purpose of accessing and paying for this treatment.

If you would like to help us it would be wonderful if you could share this campaign accross your social media platforms with a message of support as the more people we can reach the faster Billy can receive this treatment.

I will personally be posting regular updates about our progress to keep you involved in our journey.

Thank you so much, with all my heart, hope and faith.

Love and Light,

Becky, Billy's mum. xxx

I wanted to give you all an update of how things have been progressing as I have had so many individual messages asking where things are at. Since starting this process we have gained access to so much information about the best treatment options for Billy and I have been researching everything thoroughly to ensure we make the best and safest choices concerning Billy’s treatment. This has taken a lot of my time and has been an almost constant flurry of e mails, phone calls and not least getting all Billy’s medical records sent to various places securely!

Despite being very unwell for the last 2 weeks, we have made constructive steps towards Billy’s treatment plan.
Thanks to all of your donations we have been able to pay for our first consultation with the specialist oncologist in America who believe Billy Is an excellent candidate for the targeted immunotherapy treatment.
We are starting by having a biopsy taken from Billy’s lung as this will form the basis of identifying the genetic coding of Billy’s particular cancer and therefore which drugs will be effective.
We are hoping that the Biopsy will be done in the next 2 weeks. As it takes several months for the immunotherapy vaccine to be developed from the biopsy sample, Billy will continue to have standard chemotherapy at home. This is extremely important to hopefully control the active disease until the immunotherapy vaccine can be given.
Billy’s NHs consultant is being very supportive and is fully aware of our plans to access the targeted treatment for Billy

Hello lovely friends and supporters,

I wanted to give you all an update of how things are progressing as a lot of you have been asking after Billy.

Since starting this process we have gained so much knowledge and insight into the best treatment options available for Billy. As you can imagine, as a nurse, I have been researching everything thoroughly to ensure we make the best and safest decisions concerning Billy's treatment options.

This has taken up a lot of my time and it has been a constant flurry of e mails, phone calls and discussions with various medical professionals, not least getting all Billy's medical records together and sent to the appropriate places for review! At times I have broken a little over the last few weeks, thankfully my mum came to stay with us which was emotional and practical support for me and also lovely for Billy who loves his grandma.
On top of this Billy has been very unwell in the last 2 weeks and has been in hospital which is where I write to you from today.

Having said all this, I am very pleased to tell you that despite the stress and anxiety of recent weeks, we are finally able to update you with positive news!
Thanks to your generous support so far, we were able
to have our first official consultation with The American Oncologist who will be supporting us throughout Billy's treatment process. We were lucky enough to be introduced to him by a lovely lady whose own mother was very prolific in raising public awareness around the need for cancer patient's to access new treatments quicker. This contact has been a saving grace in giving us guidance and as such we are confident that we are now following the safest medically approved route in treating Billy. As such, some details have changed slightly and I have updated the page story to reflect this also.

The first step is to take a new Biopsy from one of Billy's lung tumours. This will be carried out in the next 2 weeks, pending Billy being well and not getting any further infections. The sample will then
be analysed by scientists to identify which specific gene expressions are evident within the tumour. From the findings of this process, an immunotherapy vaccine will be created which will be given to Billy every 3 weeks and which will help Billy's own immune system fight against the cancer causing genes .

The process from biopsy to developing and administering the treatment can take several months and therefore as Billy has active disease right now, he will continue with standard chemotherapy here at home which will hopefully control any disease progression until he can have the immunotherapy.
At Billy's last scan there had been some growth in his lung tumours so having some chemo now is very important.

Our Nhs consultant is fully aware of our plans and is being very supportive within the capacity of their role. They are being very good in ensuring the treatment Billy has now will not interfere with the targeted immunotherapy vaccine and this is very reassuring for both Billy and I.

As mentioned in the update to the page story, once the Immunotherapy vaccination has been developed Billy will be required to go to Germany every three weeks to access the treatment. Our American oncologist has advised that a two year supply of vaccination is usually made therefore we must factor in these costs. He has also advised that Car-T cell therapy may be a long lasting option for Billy going forwards and as we progress throughout this process we will update you all step by step of any changes to his treatment protocol and costs etc.

From a personal perspective I just wanted to say that due to positive developments this week I now feel that we are moving in the right direction and want to thank all of you for making this a possibility for Billy and to let you know that the process has commenced and the funds are now being used to pay for Billy's treatment on a step by step basis which is a great accomplishment, thank you. x

We still need to keep going with the fundraising as we have a considerable way to go but to be able to start paying for the first steps is such a brilliant feeling and Billy and I want to thank you all with all our hearts for supporting us. Your kindness and support of Billy is literally saving his life and I want you all to know what a massive difference you are making and how much we so appreciate every single one of you. XXXXX
Please keep sharing and please keep Billy's campaign current, we still need your help.
You are all so wonderful. xxxxx
Love from Becky, Billy's mum.

Billy was admitted to hospital last Thursday night with severe chest pain and fever. He has been treated with several IV antibiotics and has been very ill. He has an infection in his lung.
Fortunately today, after 4 days if being very ill he seems to be on the mend.
This admission only serves to highlight the importance and urgency of getting Billy the cancer treatment he desperately needs to save his life.
We will be having our first consultation with the American oncologist in the next few days and hope to get a plan started.
We will need to raise at least 200k and possibly more for Billy to have a complete course of treatment so please, share his campaign page, donate if you can and continue to keep Billy’s campaign current and active and help to save Billy’s life. Xxxx
