Life Saving Cancer Treatment for Sarah

Donation protected
My name is Sarah Day. I turned 40 in September and I live with my wonderful husband Simon and my two beautiful girls, Ava 7 and Nelly 2. In August 2015 when I was four months pregnant (with our very longed for second child, Nelly) I was diagnosed with breast cancer.

At what was supposed to be a very special time in our lives, life suddenly became very scary. The hospital wanted to start treatment straight away, however after speaking with the surgeons and specialists from the hospital - it became very clear that there would be no guarantees that our baby would make it into the world safely. Call it mother’s instinct to protect my baby or divine intervention, something within my heart spoke to me and told me to decline treatment at that time; I believed that there must be another way for us to navigate the challenge we were facing.

It became my mission to learn as much about cancer and staying well during my pregnancy - so I could reach the first goal I had set myself, of bringing our baby into the world unharmed. In February 2016 one of my proudest moments happened I gave birth to our daughter.  We had done it! Nell was delivered naturally, she was beautiful, healthy, safe and well.

Next step, mission “Lets Get Mum Well!” I embarked upon my journey to regain my health and began my immunotherapy treatment. The treatment went well and I went from strength to strength.  In August 2017 my bloods looked good and I was on the home straight to achieving my goal of being cancer free.

Unfortunately, in March 2018 I was taken ill with a severe flu virus and my immune system became compromised. From this point onwards I had a cough that I just couldn’t shift and my health deteriorated. At first I thought I had pneumonia, but further tests confirmed our worst fears - the breast cancer was back and had metastasized to my lungs and my bones.

In the beginning I was private about my health condition. I wanted to take responsibility so felt it important that I found the money to pay for my treatments.  Over the years this has cost a considerable amount of money and both my husband and me have worked hard to find ways to pay for it.  We had also raked up considerable debt, but I felt proud that I was taking responsibility for my situation.

Currently I am now very poorly, strapped to an oxygen machine with a drain attached to my lung and unable to fend for myself. My husband has also had to give up his work to care for me. All of these factors combined, mean that we need to let go of our pride and finally ask for help. Treatment once again comes at a considerable cost and this is why we are reaching out for support.

I am once again receiving a more intense course of immunotherapy treatment to regain my health.  It is expected that my body will respond, as it responded well the first time around. With this treatment we are confident that I will be able to fully recover from cancer and once again become self - sufficient.

Everyday is a challenge, treatments are painful but I am determined to regain my health. I dig deep and have promised my family that I will never give up. I have two beautiful girls who not only need me, but also deserve to have me in their lives for many years to come. My 7 year old daughter and I say to one another on a daily basis ‘never ever give up’ and I will not break that promise I have made to her as long as there is breath left within my body, I am so determined to get well and stay where I am meant to be with my family.

To all that know me, you will know that I will fight this all the way. I’m a very tenacious character. I want to be able to dance with my girls again, take them swimming, cook them tea and tuck them into bed (all of the things we take for granted). I am, for now weak and in a lot of pain on a daily basis, but that is not the hardest part of cancer.  Cancer is robbing me of the opportunity to be a proper mum to my girls, and wife to my husband. I use this desire as motivation and inspiration to get well. I also hold onto the vision that I will live to one-day dance with my grand children, take them swimming, have them for sleepovers and read them bedtime stories. Lets hope the universe grants us the funds, support, knowledge and time to make this my reality.

My family and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for reading my story, and for any donation you are able to make, in helping me reach my goal.

With love and gratitude

Sarah
