The last 3 weeks I have been in South Africa. I have had the pleasure of working with Janet Landey at Skills Village. Janet has been utilizing the event model to create Jobs for Youth. South Africa's unemployment rate is +40%, and the population of young men and women unemployed is unbelievable. They want to work, but the opportunities are limited, or do not exist. Many have to travel far, and do not have resources. Sadly there are many living in poverty(limited food, no utilities). Yet passion and hope are in abundance. Events create an opportunity to develop skills, give back and create a socially inclusive space.
IFEA Africa - International Festivals & Events Association Africa, Skills Village 2030 and Mary's Community Centre is inviting you join me in implementing a socio-economic and skills development initiative that would create workplace experience for young entrepreneurs in the event value chain - #LetYouthCreateJobs.
Creating great experiences for the local community children who would partake in a choice of activities - learning about the Sustainable Development Goals and learning to plan, prepare and produce their own small Birthday Xperience.
What is a Birthday Experience:
The #LetYouthCreateJobs young entrepreneurs would gain valuable workplace experience by working with the children who would be participating in weekly activities aligned to the Sustainable Development Goals, like
•The Jane Goodall’s roots & shoots club, The Local Story Exchange, The SDG Heroes for Change, the Birthday Xperience and more…. igniting creativity and learning new skills through the planning, preparing and producing of activities, small events and mini-parades aligned to the Sustainable Development Goals. Learning to Project Manage their own Birthday Xperience. The youth driven cooperative model creates a circular economy - with youth getting the job done and making a difference in the lives empowered in the process. The Birthday Xperience members will
•enjoy a soup and salad lunch snack at the weekly programmes – at the same time supporting the Food & Beverage Primary Cooperative that will prepare the food and the Agro-Ecology Primary Cooperative growing and supplying the vegetables
•the members will each get a 'city safari' jacket onto which they can sew the Sustainable Development Goal badges that they earn for participation in the SDG events. The Sewing Cooperatives and the Print Marketing Cooperative will be sewing and printing the “city safari” jackets and badges.
•The Performing, Creative & Visual Arts Cooperatives would be beneficiaries as they inspire creativity in the planning, preparing and producing of mini-parades aligned to the Sustainable Development Goals. As well creating the entertainment for the Birthday Xperience - from puppets and stiltwalkers, to arts and crafts
•The IT Cooperative would build capacity for this new generation of young members as they learn to research and participate in activities like project managing, coding - simple robotics and other activities
•The Event Coordinators gain valuable experience as they work with the children planning, preparing and producing activities and events aligned to the Sustainable Development Goals.
•Engaging the parents and youth to identify local commodities, goods, services and experiences unique to the local community. Working towards a Dynamic Linkage System that will bring buyers and sellers together as they start planning, preparing and producing Local Community Market Days which will showcase local offerings.
• Supporting young entrepreneurs working alongside social and environmental responsibility
