For those of you that have seen the horrific torture and trauma recently inflicted on a young man in Chicago, it is not something you will soon forget.

The perpetrators have been apprehended and hopefully swift justice will be served.  But let's take an opportunity now to show this young man and his family some financial support during this difficult time of recovery and let him know there are many out there that are here for him.

I've coordinated and verified a number of fundraisers through reddit.com/r/upliftingnews and promise that 100% of funds raised will go directly to this young man and/or his family/guardians.  Let's prove to him that there is far more good in this world than the evil he experienced.

In less than two weeks, the amount of donations that has poured into this campaign has been astounding. More than $177,000 has been raised from over 5,700 people across all 50 states and over 40 countries!

But the amount of well wishes Austin and his family has received through the P.O. Box has been incredible as well! According to the family (who allowed me to share with all of you), they “have been receiving items since Monday, and have gotten everything from prayers, to homemade cards from students/children, to jokes to make Austin smile, and also some brave people who shared their touching stories of dealing with mental illnesses and abuse. It is really touching to see all the goodness.”

In addition, “Austin has also received many Chicago Bulls items like clothes, blankets, hats, a personalized pillow case, which he really loves. One of the really neat gifts Austin received was from a man who sent a letter about an incident that he went through and how music helped him get through it. With the letter came two electronic hand instruments. One of them was a drum which Austin has really taken a liking to.

Between the Go Fund Me page and the well wishes through the mail, it has no doubt shown Austin that the majority of this world is filled with love and kindness.”

The family has created a community Facebook page to try to reciprocate all of the love they received and share some of the letters and gifts mailed from others, which can be found here:

https://www.facebook.com/Chicago-VictimAustin-Returns-The-Love-1133674013418142/

Lastly, I have updated the photo of this fundraiser to represent the latest chapter in this tale. Thanks again for all of your love and support!

CNN just ran a story on this campaign and I was bit nervous to read it given all of the recent allegations that they are nothing but fake news these days! But it was a good article and had some new updates from the family including a VIP experience that the Bulls put together for Austin, so thanks to everybody that reached out to the team!

I've gotten a lot of questions and seen a lot of comments from people asking why I created this fundraiser when I didn't know Austin or his family. There is no quick or easy answer to this question, and at the time I didn't want to shift any focus away from Austin and the purpose of the campaign, but now that things have finally begun to settle down, I spoke with Colby Itkowitz of the Washington Post yesterday, who wrote this excellent piece that answers a lot of these questions far better than I ever could.

I just came across this recent article from the Chicago Sun Times, and figured I'd share a few excerpts from the family's friend, attorney and official spokesman:

A GoFundMe campaign titled “Let’s show the Chicago Victim love” had raised $153,840 as of Tuesday afternoon, just five days after the page was started by a good Samaritan with no connection to the family. The money is sorely needed as the man, an 18-year-old who suffers from schizophrenia, will need to recover from a days-long ordeal that began when an acquaintance kidnapped him on New Year’s Eve, said Neal Strom, an attorney who is helping the man’s family deal with press inquiries.

“My clients are overwhelmed with the warm, kind generosity of perfect strangers,” Strom said Tuesday. “It just came out of the clear blue sky . . . it shows that there are good people out there after all [the victim] has been through.”

Strom said the abuse was traumatic and terrifying for the victim, whom he described as “shy and introverted.” The six-figure pot of donations will be used to get treatment for him, not just for the stress of the incident but mental health care his working-class family has struggled to provide throughout his life, said Strom, who said he is not charging the family for his help.

“It will be 100 percent devoted to providing for him, with things he’s never really had, enough resources to counsel and properly diagnose and treat his mental state,” Strom said, adding the money likely will be placed in a court-monitored trust. “The family is not well-off at all. They have very, very modest means. Anything in this account will be judiciously used to get this young man the help that he needs.”

Strom said he has fielded calls and offers from organizations and individuals across the U.S., but has spoken only to family members, and he isn’t sure how aware the victim is of the many people expressing sympathy. Cards and letters have also flooded a P.O. Box in Cary, Illinois, set up by a relative.

“It’s been overwhelming,” Strom said. “I hope that this will connect [the family] with organizations and opportunities that would never have been available to them, had it not been for this horrible, disgusting, beyond-belief thing that happened.”

I have asked Go Fund Me to verify this campaign is legitimate. However, it appears to be so because the man who started it is part of the social news website Reddit. Our son and daughter are Autistic. If this is legitimate, we will be generously donating.

This is for everyone that keeps questioning is it a scam? Can you please verify before we donate?! How about this everyone do a little homework, follow the links, look into it check, Fox News gives this guy's name saying he started a GoFundMe! So before you all keep insulting this man & leaving comments that could make other people think its a scam & not donate & prevent this poor kid of getting money when needed because people want to be lazy & not try to verify if its real or not! I'm computer illiterate and I still verified it before I came on the page! So think before you leave a comment and do a little homework because your comment could prevent someone else from donating! Sorry if I offend anybody but I read all the comments left on here and a lot of people questioning this gentleman when all they have to do is a little homework!

This was unspeakable torture on a handicap kid, 4 people who committed this crime on him should get life without parole! I hope the people that made this GoFundMe consider raising it to at least $500,000 goal so that poor boy & his family has enough money to buy a house cash and to have money for moving expenses out of that city! Hopefully to the country where he's less likely to come to harm from thugs like that! My family and I wish him a speedy recovery and pray he can get past this experience one day! I just hope he doesn't think all people are evil like that especially think all colored people are like that because they are not! Best of wishes from New Bedford Massachusetts!

Just a thought. If this young man is on any kind of government program due to his disability they have strict income limits or they kick you off the program. Perhaps the parents/guardian could see about setting up a Special Needs Trust Fund. That way this young man could stay on any assistance program and not be penalized. https://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/how-special-needs-trust-funds-can-be-used.html

In response to some people asking what the money is for, Id say there are lots of ways it would help. It could be used for more medical, especially therapy, beyond what insurance would cover. I think it would be used to enable the family to take more time off of work then they could without everyones generous donations to spend with him (lost wages). If enough is raised I think taking a trip with his family knowing that all types of people from all over did that for him would help restore some faith in humanity for him. I'd think think that would help the healing process too. Of course it's ultimately up to his parents/guardians to do what they think best. I'd like to personally thank Razor for organizing this and working with NPR to verify the funds go to the victims guardians.

Hopefully the young man can go on a vacation with his family to a place where he can make many new and pleasant memories! I really don't mind how the young man spends the money, and would like to send a note and gifts to him as well. He needs all of our support and seeing all of the contributions is heart warming!!
