Let’s Rally for Red4EdNC!
Who are the people behind Red4EdNC?
Red4EdNC is an organization of NC teachers who have worked since 2013 to inspire and support reform of our state’s education policy.
We are teachers from across the state who are concerned that each child in North Carolina is not receiving their constitutional right to an appropriate education. We have tried to stop the General Assembly’s supermajority, representing mostly gerrymandered districts of their own creation, from passing laws that have negatively impacted student learning conditions and teacher working conditions in North Carolina.
Our efforts have not been successful because representative democracy in our state has been significantly undermined. Our ability to influence policy through the conventional means of election and petition is profoundly compromised by our current political climate.
After five years of protesting, writing, electioneering, engaging in public discourse, policy development and lobbying (from within and beside membership-based teacher advocacy organizations), we now understand:
It is time to leverage technology to unify supporters of public education in North Carolina across all advocacy groups, districts, and the ideological spectrum to achieve specific legislative priorities determined by a representative, elected body of NC teachers.

How will the NC Teacher Congress work?
On July 4, 2018, we issued a declaration stating our grievances and calling for the imminent formation of the NC Teacher Congress. We will have teachers from 100 different school districts sign the document by August 1st and will then deliver the signed document to our elected state leaders.
Next, we will focus on organizing schools behind a school-based leader. School leaders will collect commitments for collective action from their faculty and then pledge that number of teachers to a zone leader of their choosing that will represent them at the Congress.
Zone leaders who attend the Congress must have at least 250 teachers pledged to them. They will seek input from those teachers about resolutions debated during the Congress.
At the Congress, over 100 representatives will vote on specific resolutions to present the General Assembly before it convenes in January 2019. The Congress will put extreme pressure on the legislators with the power of statewide unity and collective action.

Why is a GoFundMe campaign necessary?
Our plan is to hold the NC Teacher Congress in Raleigh over MLK Weekend on January 19-21, 2019. Red4EdNC board members have already invested $893 in personal donations to get this idea off the ground.
Each teacher that submits a commitment form to their school leader will be asked to donate $1 for Congress expenses. Each zone leader will represent 250 teachers, so this will raise $250 per representative for transportation and lodging.
These are the remaining estimated costs associated with this event:
Statewide marketing campaign: $5,000
Venue rental and fees: $3,000
Meals provided for representatives and volunteers: $10,000
Speaker and Parliamentarian Fees: $1,000

We are NC Teachers. We know that North Carolina's children deserve the educational opportunity our state constitution guarantees. They are being short-changed.
Won't you help us demand the public schools they deserve?
