We all grow up understanding that there are winners and losers in a democracy. But most of us in America grew up with the hope and belief that our elections are fair, that we all have an equal opportunity to vote, and that our votes all count equally.
But Donald Trump warned us again and again that the election was "rigged." What if--for once--he was telling the truth? ...Except that it was actually rigged against his opponent, Hillary Clinton?
This is not a far-fetched conspiracy. Pre-election polls assured us that Clinton should win soundly, and even Trump's own party clearly expected him to lose. While the science of pre-election polling is certainly imperfect, it's usually not THAT off.
Exit polls are much more accurate than pre-election polls, because they ask people who they voted for, not who they might vote for. Around the world, exit polls are the gold standard for determining if election results are fair and accurate. While exit polls in America are not quite up to the same standard, they are still our first tool for evaluating electoral fairness. The Edison Research Institution, which conducts exit polls all over the world, has collected state-by-state data for all the battleground states in the U.S. 2016 election and several other states as well. That raw data will not be publicly available for 6 months unless we pay them for them now.
Right now, all we have are carefully calculated suspicions from a few corners of the internet that something was... off... about this election. There's even a video now that explains what that guy found. But we need the real data to find out whether or not it's true, so we can bring legal action against some states if necessary.
TIME IS PRECIOUS!
The electoral college votes on December 19. Preparing legal action against certain states will require time and money. Our goal is to collect the necessary funds to buy the data we need from the Edison Research Institution as soon as possible. We aim to publish the results online within 48 hours. The stated price for this information from Edison is $70,000, and we need your help!
We're not promising we can change the results of this election, but we want to know if everyone had a fair voice. And we don't want to wait six months to find out.

The media has been depending on two explanations for the "surprising" outcome of this election: pollsters sampled the wrong people, and people were afraid to admit they were planning to vote for Trump. While pre-election polls are very vulnerable to sampling bias, exit polls are typically much less vulnerable to that bias, so exit polls are essential for determining the truth of the first claim. As for the second, there is very little scientific precedent for the idea that people would be afraid to admit to pollsters who they voted for. Having the real exit poll results would help us figure out if there is a more serious problem with the election itself at work. The publicly available results are problematic because the data are "cleaned" to match the election results on the optimistic assumption that the election was fair. But in other countries, major exit poll and election result discrepancies are used as key evidence of electoral fraud.
The primary organizer for this, Dr. Julie Fennell, holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Brown University. She's not a tinfoil hat conspiracy theorist. She's a scientist looking to make sense of something that currently doesn't look sensible. And she wants all of us to have the answer to the most important question of this election: who actually voted for the person slated to become our next president?
